Also, I would suggest calling the wildlife bio for the area you plan to hunt. I had a great conversation with the bio there, and he was very helpful. I gave him the parameters of what I wanted out of the hunt and he gave feedback on spots I had picked out e-scouting and suggested others to look at.
Jump on Utah DWR's website and interactive map. They'll have some info on your elk hunt, they typically list the popular spots and discuss access a bit. Can't help you with the early season, but I had a deer tag in Wasatch in 2018 and spent a some time there. It's got plenty of roads in the...
This is great advice. Bring good optics, including a spotter. Also, get on IDFG's website and go through the statistics on the units you're looking at. The interactive map is pretty good and will show you the roads, trails, wilderness, etc. That might help you get a flavor for each unit, and...
I've never compared the two side-by-side. Seems like when you get into the upper end Kowa, Leica, Zeiss, Swaro you can't go wrong and have to look hard to find any negatives. Mostly a size and weight thing and what fits your style of hunting, and budget.
Backpack hunting: Thermarest Xtherm long-wide. I take the weight penalty for the extra width. Very comfortable pad for the size/weight. Slight crinkly noise doesn't bother me.
Truck camping (or sleeping in the truck bed): Exped Megamat 10. This thing is super comfortable and inflates easily. R...
Glad you took the time to call, and thanks for posting it here. Sounds like he didn't sugar coat it. A lot is currently at stake with the antlerless harvest and damage. If you saw some of the proposed legislation last year, you'd about sh*t your pants it was so bad. We have to make sure that...
A lot of people are concerned about ODFW's strategy concerning elk. OHA stated in their publication that the commission pretty much ignored their concerns about the changes in the elk regs. Unfortunately for us hunters and those that want lots of elk, agency "management objectives" are only very...
My dad drew in OR. Third time applying for any big game license. I apply in 5 or 6 states... but I got to go on a sheep hunt and watch my dad shoot a nice old ram.
I had 15s and sold them. Bought 12s instead and upped my glass quality. So on mule deer hunts I'm carrying the 12s on my chest and can run them off the tripod. Spotter in the pack if its warranted for the terrain. I didn't have 10s already though, or my process may have been different, only 8s...
ODFW Bighorn Sheep Regulations
Actually, some of the NR odds aren't all that much worse than residents, but there are only a handful of tags. The John Day system hunts say "NEW" but they just merged the east and west sides of the river together. So you could figure your rough odds by adding the...
I haven't hunted there, but have spent a fair amount of time around Thompson and plenty of time in the 'bush' west of town. The landscape is a mosaic of different aged stands of black spruce (age a function of fire). Plenty of wet bogs dominated by sphagnum moss and scrawny spruce. There are...
A good many of us. Some companies are just flat against producing LH. I gave up long ago contacting rifle mfg. Just buy a Tikka, Savage, or Browning. They offer plenty of LH options.
I settled on the Kowa 774. Wanted good glass with enough magnification to get well above my 12x binos. Thought long and hard about the 554 because I know I would carry it more often. I want to own both... but alas. I began looking at 65mm Leica, but the weight difference wasn't much between the...
Awesome goat! I love it that these old threads are getting revived, as I missed them. Saw your Dall's sheep too Oak, couple of solid years in AK!
cheers, -sp
There are is a BLM allotment <20mi from this herd's range, and they don't have to cross a lot of non-habitat to get there. Also some hobby or small farm flocks around. You can see the BLM allotment in relation to bighorn range here: WAFWA WSG Oregon BLM Lookout is on the Oregon side of the Snake...
Sad, but unfortunately true. The BHS herd in question is a true native herd (not translocated from other places), hence the extreme action to protect the few remaining animals and the population genetics. But if you look at the amount of overlap and high risk grazing between domestic sheep and...
