Waterfowl Hunter Shot - Apparent Accident. Iowa.

FWIW, I had a broken firing pin in a shotgun recently. Got it fixed of course, but apparently it could have been broken and functioning for a while in that state, which is a dangerous state. I believe the safety issue that could have happened in that instance is that when I pumped the gun to...

    As they lay

I need to do a much better job of taking a landscape shot along with the critter. And I need to hunt in cooler places like this one. Outstanding pic!

    As they lay

No matter how well you think you hit it, if it ran off, I get this pang of anxiety until I see it down, and I always get this huge rush of relief when I find it. Same thing when the dog comes up with a wounded/dead bird that you couldn't find.

Another really good option is blackening. I use Paul Prudhomme Blackened Redfish Magic seasoning (in spice aisle at grocery store). Just coat one side heavily and then pan fry in butter. It's great straight up or in a fish sandwich or taco. I started doing this on backcountry fishing trips...

@neffa3, this looks like an awesome, tough bird hunt. Spectacular scenery. What elevation are you hoofing around at?

What's your general approach... Ground blind? Tree stand? Sit all day or get em patterned and come for primetime? How far back off the bait do you sit?

Staying Warm on Late Season Hunts

I remembered this exchange from last year so though I would post. I was back in that familiar situation this weekend. Well, not quite, but I had left my left hand chopper mitt with my bowhunting stuff and ended up on a pheasant hunt with only the righty. Turned righty inside out and I was good...

    Greatest Shot Ever--A Thread--Post Your's

So were you offhand aiming for a mouth shot from 125 yards out or were you aiming for the vitals and your shot about 2-3' from where you were aiming? I'm either not impressed with your decision making, your shooting skills, or most likely, I'm not impressed with either. I've messed up in the...

    What are you currently reading?

Post WW2 Canadian government biologist that spent the summer observing arctic wolves. Fascinating animals, well written, humorous. I’m an ecologist and this guy was way ahead of the science dogma at the time so it was fun to read an old natural history book that was controversial at the time but...

Need tripod to hold rifle for my son

Perhaps not helpful, but just bought a tripod at goodwill for $7. They had like 5 on the shelf. There are lots of hunting specific adapters/clamps you could add on. But before you unnecessarily drop 150 bucks you might want to swing by a thrift shop and see what they got.

    Loud Gun

Randy had a really eye (ear?) opening podcast on hearing loss with an ear doc on. Worth a listen. Every time we shoot loud guns we're getting more hearing damage and it all adds up. No more hearing to protect is not true, unless you're full on deaf. After listening to the podcast, I'll bet...

If you can only do one.....

Can you describe or show more pictures of what your dog is lying in in that canoe? Is that some sort of dog bed thing you made, or some other thing he just happens to be lying in? Half curiosity, but if its some sort of thing that makes it easier to travel with a dog in a canoe I'm interested...

    Picking up Cold Game

My lab didn't pick up dead birds when he was young (he loves the runners though). I first started playing keepaway with a skinned pelt stuffed with some socks on a stick and string. Tease that in front of a dogs nose for 5 seconds, he's going to want to put it in his mouth. Did that game for a...
