    Brass organization

Brass fired in a different chamber CAN be an issue, but probably isn't. I've got one batch that's been used in between five and eight different barrels and I haven't had to do anything special, but I have kept a close eye on headspace and it's generally been consistent within .001". I keep my...

    Ramsey debt viewpoint explained

Agreed on all you wrote here VG. I think Dave has very helpful advice for the average person, if imperfect. But, as in many other fields, if you go all in on advocacy, you at some point leave the science and numbers behind.

    How important is it?

You’d have to test it out against a control for sure, but if it was my full time job it’s something I’d want to try out. I’m sure! Not to mention if you’re trying to take high speed photos, and working with a product that’s quickly decaying.

    How important is it?

The rotation of the bullet in flight doesn’t slow at the same rate as forward movement does. If it starts with extra rpm’s it hangs on to them down range. Thus, you can’t just lower the muzzle velocity, shoot at close range, and get the same results. Yep.

    How important is it?

From the people I know who’ve been involved in doing gel testing at a professional level, reducing muzzle velocity to get a lower impact velocity will skew the results for exactly the reason you’re thinking. I took it from our conversation that they sometimes go to the trouble of doing the gel...

    How important is it?

If they come apart shortly before a plate it can appear similar to a hit, otherwise it’s just a puff of dust.

    How important is it?

While I like what I’ve seen from ELD’s terminally, I’ve personally seen them come apart in other people’s rifles, never my own. Not crazy setups either, 6 Creeds and 6.5 PRC’s. Uncommon, but it has happened.

    The game is changing

Tangent unrelated to the OP, apologies to Vikingsguy. I read the book in 4th grade and the movie came out when I was in 6th. It was to me what Star Wars was to so many kids in the 70’s. I was REALLY into dinosaurs probably a skosh longer than I really should have been. I got National...

    How important is it?

Just pointing out, a 88 ELD and a 212 ELD have far more similar impact velocity ranges for ideal performance (I'm looking for 1800 fps minimum, would rather have 2000 fps), than they do energy ranges. Same as, if I was shooting .224 64 gr Hammer Hunters or .308 174 gr Hammer Hunters, I'm...

    How important is it?

The wound channel was barely over caliber size, and I observed almost zero bloodshot. Maybe the “neck” of the wound buried the bulk of the damage inside the organs, but handling the lungs it didn’t look like it to me. You’ve been looking at the wrong column this entire thread. Impact...

    How important is it?

FWIW I observed my iffiest wound channel ever in a dead animal this year with a 108 elite hunter impacting an elk at ~ 2100 fps. I saw better results with an 88 ELD @ 1900 fps and way better results with a 103 ELD @ 2400 fps. Probably a one off, as I know lots of others have had good results...

    How important is it?

I couldn’t recommend the permanent yardage marked turret, or ANYONE selling the same. That said, a turret labeled with yardage (and preferably a mil backup) can make sense for a specific hunt where you have a pretty good idea what the density altitude will be. It should definitely be...

    How important is it?

BC definitely mattered even at 532 yds. I was shooting a short-ish 6 Dasher and a less aggressive (lower bc) bullet like even a 95 gr Nosler BT would have been going pretty slow at that distance for decent terminal performance. Wind drift certainly matters too, but the intermittent fog...

    How important is it?

I have good evidence I’m an “above average” shooter. A couple years ago I had an opportunity at the biggest buck of my life at 750ish, which is a high percentage shot for me. I had a pretty concealed path to the next ridge which ended up being 532 yds, and risked the chance he’d move or the...

    How important is it?

BC is one of the primary things I look for in a bullet (but certainly not the ONLY criteria), and yes I shoot big game far enough that it matters. No doubt the average hunter certainly shouldn’t.

The January Topic: KUIU vs Sitka!

I’m sitting at Sitka:1, Kuiu:0, Mountaineering brands:maybe 50? A lot of my clothing was bought years ago when I got many brands at a discount, and the hunting oriented companies were still finding their feet. If I was gearing up today I’m sure there’d be more SG/Kuiu/Sitka in the mix. They...

    Teaching kids to clean guns

Cleaning practices among some of the top shooters range from: Clean the oil out of the bore from chambering, then never touch it for the life of the barrel. To Clean between each and every group, for the life of the barrel. So…there is no consensus as to how often you should clean. There...

Stockys ultra carbon tikka vertical grip

I expect the cheekpiece will land somewhere between the one I showed (with a factory CTR cheek riser) and at most 1/4” higher at the point you actually index your face on. I know they’ve done plenty of testing and say it works fine with low rings. I actually like a lower cheek piece as prefer...

Stockys ultra carbon tikka vertical grip

I’m looking forward to a Rokstock arrival over here… This only gets me to even with the bore line, and doesn’t come out of the Stone Glacier sling smooth every time.
