All that said, if Apple's new cell-to-sat features work out the way their promising, I will almost certainly cancel my InReach subscription at some point.
As the Spartans famously said: if.
A few thoughts:
First and foremost, please only trust your lifeline to proven, reliable systems, not to nascent tech. Cell-based satcoms is very promising, but it's not here yet, and there will be bugs to work out. You don't want to find a bug in the system when you're in a medical emergency in...
+1 for the Ruger American. Mine in 22wmr has shot almost everything extremely well straight from the box (until I realize how long it’s been since I’ve cleaned it, anyway 😂)
I don’t disagree on any particular point. By saying we overthink it, I’m mainly getting at the idea that factory 243 loads are already light on recoil, and reduced-recoil hand loads are going to be only a minor change.
If he’s flinching with factory 243 loads, some practice with a 22wmr or 223...
I've been using a Hennessy Hammock Ultralight for something like 15 years. It's light, convenient, shockingly storm proof (seriously, it does not make sense that these things will keep you dry when there's any wind, but I've slept dry through dozens of all-night downpours), and I sleep like a...
90gr E-tips leaving the muzzle at 2700fps (minimum published velocity and a full 10% slower than the factory 243 loads) will still be going 2200 fps and carrying 1k ft-lbs of energy at 200 yds.
80gr CX at 2900 MV (factory loads go 3200) will be moving 2275fps at 200 yds.
80gr Barnes TTSX at...
IMHO, we wayyyy overthink the "reduced recoil" thing. I don't know your boy; is a minor reduction in recoil actually going to make a difference in his ability to shoot accurately enough at 150 yds?
On the terminal performance note, I don't think you have anything at all to be worried about...
☝️ this. And the comment that the scout rifle, per se, was a solution to a problem that never existed.
A lightweight rifle capable of engaging human and game-sized targets from close range to 300-ish yards, absolutely. Enter the AR platform in any of the various legal calibers, the Sig Cross...
The key phrase was "at the moment." I have Starlink at home and the SAR team has one for the unit. They're awesome, and their cell-to-sat tech looks very promising. But it's in beta, and while yeah probably someone will help beta test the new system while hunting this fall, none of that makes...
Starlink isn't a contender in this market at the moment, as it requires much more ground-based equipment, so I'm not sure why we'd compare them.
That said, calling InReach a pager is 100% deserved 🤣. I'm thankful for the tech and use it all the time, but LORT is it a long way behind the state...
I'm not sure we need Garmin's InReach program, but I get what you're saying. Garmin, frankly, has been resting on their laurels, mainly their acquisition of DeLorme (who created the InReach in the first place), for long enough and deserves some good old-fashioned competition from firms large...
I don't think they're in trouble this fall, but they've certainly got some growing competition. As was pointed out above, Garmin InReach works on the Iridium network, which offers more than double the number of satellites than Globalstar, which provides the services that SPOT and the iPhones...
Thanks! I have a test run of the CXs loaded over H4350 and ready for my next range trip. The next two weeks are crazy but thankfully I've got plenty of time before hunting season.
Adding my 2¢ as an avid backpack hunter in the fall and SAR / mountain rescue operations leader year-round.
First and foremost, the ability to call for help using satellite networks is critical for anyone operating in the backcountry. Whether it's your phone or a dedicated device, please make...
I used to carry a pistol but once I started bear hunting and learned how skittish and shy they are, I just doesn't seem worth the weight anymore.
On a related note, I was in Sportsmans Warehouse a couple weeks ago and (from the other side of the store) I overheard the kid behind the gun...
Hey folks,
Is anyone loading the 139gr 7mm Hornday CX in 7mm-08?
The Ace Hardware near my house started carrying them for ~$0.80/ea, so I just picked up a box of 50. I have H4350, RL-16, and IMR4064 on hand, and Hornady and Hodgdon post data for those so I'll give them a shot. I'm curious what...
