Not hunting related, but one of the most epic campsites I've been at recently nonetheless! And as a bonus, no risk of anyone stealing this as a hunting spot (although there are LOTS of goats here 😅).
I found something cool! Based on the associated youtube videos, I believe they're using the Mann-Whitney U test to compare the groups, and I'm not ready to give up hope that there's a parametric test that offers better statistical precision, but it's still an awesome tool...
Yeah a warmer-than-you-might-otherwise carry sleeping pad is a must when using a hammock. There are also "underquilts" which I've heard good things about but haven't used personally. I have a Nemo Tensor ultralight insulated pad and a sierra designs quilt/bag hybrid thing that's rated to 35°F...
I'll look forward to your report on this issue with your randomly assigned 223 Rem control group. Don't forget I'm a stickler for statistical significance.
I've seen cow elk run off apparently uninjured after a 300 WSM went through the chest and sprayed a cloud of blood out the back side (thankfully my buddy was eventually able to sneak in for another shot and put her down - lots of damage to the lungs but you certainly couldn't tell from her...
My regular nemo Tensor pad has been one of my favorite pieces of gear for a long time, and I recent got a new one compliments of Nemo because mine had an odd fabric issue (they new one they sent me uses slightly different fabric and doesn't seem to have the issue).
If I needed more R value...
If I were buying for a hunt this fall, I'd buy the mini no questions asked. The reasons have been covered: standalone SOS, small size and weight, etc etc. I'm currently using my Explorer SE and it's bulkier than I'd like, but not bulky enough to spend the $$ to upgrade.
FWIW, I also have an...
Just for clarity, none of this is to actually say that the OP shouldn't create a mild load for their kid. Tinkering with a powerful engine to make it a good learner car is an interesting and fun challenge. If you want that challenge, go for it. There are lots of great suggestions already on this...
The analogy is a good one. My point is that it makes far more sense to start a young driver in a Camry than in mtmuley's Camaro with a 10% limiter.
A 243 is already a Camry.
If they can't handle that, then a go-cart is a better option than putting a limiter on an already mild-mannered car.
America would do well to learn from this experience, IMHO.
(Cue some "patriot" who thinks American animals are tougher to kill than their southern cousins.)
This is my point as well.
I'm not denying that you can tell the difference between a hot load and a reduced load; I just don't think that, if you're using the same rifle, a reduced-recoil load will actually be the difference between learning good fundamentals and developing a flinch.
As a...
There are lots of low-recoiling cartridges out there. +1 for the 7mm-08 because even when they're grown it's still a phenomenal cartridge.
That said, the overall design of the weapon is a lot more important than the chambering. Have them hold a few guns at a store if you can, or make sure what...
☝️ Best advice on this thread.
Also keep in mind that, other things being equal, a bullet designed to open at low velocity (long range) can open VERY rapidly at high velocity (short range). Nothing wrong with quick expansion—it kills just fine—but a fully-expanded bullet has a very...
