    Ryan Busse. Anyone?

Would the Vegas shooting been OK if he only had an xbolt? Of course not, but (based on your assumption) 38 people would still be alive. Maybe a 100-200 not wounded? I don't think bump stocks are protected under the 2A. Do you? These are the kinds of conversations America needs to have without...

    Blown Stalk Mule Deer Stories

Rifle season. Central Montana. Dawn. Late October. Private ranch. Glassing mid morning I find a big, bedded buck under the lip of a coulee. Amazing I ever saw him. Saw a bit of sun glint off one pair of tines, then picked the rest of the rack from the grass and brush. Really nice 5x5, snoozing...

How many packs do you have?

I just bought a cute little daypack for my wife for Valentine's Day. She made me return it. She says I have a backpack problem.

How many packs do you have?

God only knows. It would take days of digging in my garage to find out. Strata of packs in there. Hell, I still have (and use) the Kelty frame I bought for boy scout hikes almost 40 years ago...

Elevation and Grizzly Bears during scouting and hunting for Elk?

Also I will say in fall elk and bear habitat preferences have plenty of overlap. They both like cool dark north slopes with water and good habitat security. Gut piles so much the better. That said, bears are where you find 'em. Elk too.

Elevation and Grizzly Bears during scouting and hunting for Elk?

I think GPS collars have confirmed the idea that bears roam a lot of up and down on a mountain any time they are not hibernating pretty much at will. You used to hear a lot about the "following greenup up slope" or "coming down to hunt elk calves." The only thing here in NW MT that is consistent...

    Help choosing bullets for .308

This is my experience as well in 308 with TTSX. I load 160s and they are the most accurate bullet out of my 308. Very effective on deer and elk. The landowner where I hunt likes eagles and asks me to shoot copper. I see no reason to switch back to lead.

    Easy mistake.

What's your worst miss? Share your story!

I was 12 or 13. Late November in the Idaho panhandle. It had rained all day and my dad and I played cards most of the afternoon in the camper. An hour before dark I decided to walk down an abandoned railroad corridor, basically a wet meadow flanked by fir and larch forest. I was wearing one of...

    Ryan Busse. Anyone?

I've known Busse for 20 years. Hunted with him. Bought guns from him. Our boys were babies together. I was also at the rally in Kalispell where 150 vigilantes showed up with ARs, basically abusing their 2A rights to intimidate people exercising their 1A rights. Ryan's opinions and experiences...

    Hunt Elk in the rain?

That's what my old man says too. Of course he's 88. :)

    Hunt Elk in the rain?

Seriously though. I grew up hunting elk in the Idaho panhandle. If you didn't hunt elk in the rain you weren't going to hunt elk very much. Trick is preparation and attitude. No one can endure rain as long as more clement weather, but it's no reason to stop and can be a advantage.

    Hunt Elk in the rain?

The two best times to hunt elk is when it is raining and when it ain't raining.

    Mountain Shiras moose habitat

IME moose don't hole up in dark timber the same way elk do because they are not subjected to the same intense hunting pressure. Plus I don't think they are quite as sensitive to disturbance. From where I sit, it looks like moose are MORE sensitive to temperature. If they are on north slopes, its...

    Rinella is a Dork - Episode 312

Rinella is a flatlander. Not that there is anything wrong with that. I like skiing. I like ice fishing. Last weekend I mixed both together. But if God gives you mountains, enjoy the mountains. Best hunter you never heard of was Paul Schafer, local legend. Sadlly, he died skiing on the Big...

Cam Hanes (And Remi Warren) and UA Split

Thanks! That was a fun one to write. Geist was a man of ideas and intellect, well worth celebrating. Other "celebrities"? Well, I'm not so sure about. (I have spoken to Cam Hayes a time or two and he seems a nice enough guy. I don't care what brands support him. In the least. Let him buy...

Standard rounds through a 30-06 AI?

A friend of mine has a 30-06 AI he inherited from a friend. He's got a supply of hand-loads from that friend, but is not a handloader himself. Given the current ammo shortage, he asked me what is the consequence of firing standard 06 ammo through an AI. I know it will reshape the brass. But is...

    Balloons - let's see 'em

That damned thing was about a mile from the Continental Divide in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. One of the two or three most remote spots in the lower 48 states, in terms of distance from a road.
