Trying to ever get the Legislature to make FWP sell less tags than currently allowed by the 23,600 B-10 and B-11 licenses is probably a bridge too far. It’s not a fight I think we’d ever win.
Getting a reduction of boots on the ground while allowing for the same number of tags to be sold to...
Montana has a new hybrid lift system called logger wenches. You’ll find them in small bars in rural towns and if you’re nice to them they will pour you a beer and load your moose. Most will insist on riding in the cab when you go to load the moose instead of sitting on the bumper. I’ve never...
This is true, but you need to read the fine print that requires you to sleep in the gut pile for one night in homage of the life of the elk of you don’t plan to bury or pack the guts out.
“This might smell bad, kid.”
Lots of folks forget that the 17,000 combo licenses actually equate to 34,000 tags. If it was separated that could mean an additional 17,000 NR hunters in the field at the same time.
Folks can talk about “how things should be” all they want and it won’t change a thing unless they can influence FWP or the Legislature to change a policy, rule or structure.
If anyone wants change, talk with the decision makers. There’s plenty of decision makers who lurk on this site and read...
I think that was Eric, but having lived and hunted in region 1 primarily I can attest to the amount of Washington plates that used to crowd NW MT. Since wolves became more prevalent in the NW, the overall amount of NR in that area and Washington plates as well have declined.
Obviously...
It’s called an unlimited permit area. There’s multiple places in the state that currently require a permit to hunt mule deer but don’t cap the number of permits available. Those areas would still allow folks who want to hunt in the rut that opportunity.
It’s comforting to me that the main criticism so far is we aren’t going restrictive enough. I wouldn’t have thought that!😀
How about we keep archery going through the first week of October and just have the last two weeks of October be rifle season for mule deer? Think that would fly?
You wouldn’t believe how much better my hunting has become since I stopped paying attention to which units were LE and which were general.😏

We touched on this topic in our podcast conversation. We identified four parameters early in our meeting that we wanted to try to balance with the points of our proposal.
1. Socially Acceptable- if we can’t get it passed it won’t make any difference.
2. Net benefit for the resource. Our...
The proposed late season elk hunt ( non- muzzy) will be antlerless only and is not statewide. It would be unit specific based on herd numbers and whether the unit is within objective or not.
Get a coalition of like minded region 6 and 7 folks and write up your idea of what would be an appropriate cap for hunters in those areas to present to the commission. They will be the folks who make the decisions for all proposals, ours or anyone else’s.
