I’d say she’s much more in the tracking category she has not picked one up a couple hundred yards away or anything close. Just tracked cripples through thick cover while I was over searching where I thought it went down.
She’s pretty good at finding but her retrieve is D+ work, I plan to send her back to do some training and force fetch is up there along working on applying too much pressure. Finding crippled birds has been a bright spot for her season and offered a couple proud moments.
Certainly sounds like that style of hunting is more conducive to a lab style dog. I tent to run in more open areas after quail Chukar and did have a fun trip to Montana for the opener this year for Huns and sharptails but the rangier dogs tend to find more birds from the little I’ve seen
She follows her nose at a good clip and basically into any terrain if she gets a good wiff of something birdy otherwise she trots and searches at a moderate pace. In canyons like you’re mentioning she will go across and do her thing. At the end of the day, I’m killing birds I wouldn’t of without...
Appreciate it, that’s been my goal as of late. Just let her do her thing and try and put her into new areas to build on experience and comfort. Been in northwest Nevada this week, and been getting our ass kicked. Not many birds so far.
I don’t need range just for range or to compare to other dogs, my
hope is that she hits areas so I don’t have to. That being said I think there is some validity into getting into more birds or areas with more birds so she knows her searching turns into success.
I’ll start out by saying yes I know and agree range is largely genetic and you can’t make a 50yd dog a 400yd dog unless you’re the one running away. However I have a GSP in her first season and she seems to have confidence issues, checks in a fair amount and doesn’t want to go too long without...
Hands down days of bird hunting may be enjoyable like sunsets but those opportunities at once in a lifetime hunts where it’s all on the line really stick in the memory bank. I’d go sheep deer elk all day and fill in the holes with some birds. If anyone wants I will trade a Chukar honey hole for...
Almost went that way but for heat management in Southern California I went GSP but wouldn’t hesitate to go DD if climate allowed. Any feedback on how they hunt in warm areas and range?
I’m headed out this weekend to the area and am gonna give it a go around the Reno area, if I get into anything I’ll relay back. Been having good luck down here in SoCal with emm.
One other piece of info, I find that Chukar are around rock outcroppings if they’re islands on the mountain, saddles and scree slides. Along with anywhere else but I always get a bit more excited if I’m approaching that type of terrain.
