12 days in South Africa - Free State, Cape Town, and Franschhoek

After landing in Jo'berg we met up with a couple of the PH's and trackers waiting at the airport exit holding a signboard with our name on it. We found out which of the camps we were headed to (Free State), loaded up, and started the 4+ hour drive. We stopped a few times along the way to...

12 days in South Africa - Free State, Cape Town, and Franschhoek

There's only a few options for direct flights to South Africa. We booked the United Airlines flight from Newark to Johannesburg. I came to find that these are chronically delayed both coming and going. It took a couple extra hours to get off the ground for a combination of controllable and...

12 days in South Africa - Free State, Cape Town, and Franschhoek

Fast forwarding about a year: Flights are booked, deposits are paid, and we're ready to go. My wife and I decided to stay in South Africa and sightseeing for about a week after the conclusion of the hunt. A few others in the group made touristy plans of their own. I had communicated with...

12 days in South Africa - Free State, Cape Town, and Franschhoek

It all started with a phone call to my wife last July about this absurdly cheap African safari hunt that was about to sell at a Ducks Unlimited banquet. I did some quick math in my head and a surface level Google search about the outfitter. I learned quickly that Kuche is a high volume outfit...

    AFRICA! Bucket List nears... September.

Today was day one Free State, South Africa. Did 12 miles on foot chasing springbuck around, went one for two. It was surprisingly challenging, had a great time and would recommend it. The hunt continues tomorrow

    Wyoming Recommendations

I've enjoyed starting my trips in Rapid City, seeing the city itself, the Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, and Custer SP. Then out through Gilette and Buffalo to the Bighorns. Go up and over the mountains and then down into Ten Sleep, a couple Speed Goats at the brewery is a must. From there out to...

    WY 119-2 Deer

In my two trips out there, albeit in September, I don't think I saw a buck bigger than 140". And yes, they were standing under pivots along the roads or eating off haystacks. I bumped into the biologist out in the field one day and asked about it. He was of the opinion that CWD may have had a...

    WY 119-2 Deer

Hunted pronghorn out there a couple times 5 / 6 years ago. There's two places that rent cabins and RV spots, Grass Creek Ranch (now SonShine?) and Horseworks. Get a Absoroka Front HMA permit for access to private along Grass Creek Rd. Grass Creek Rd will take you to the NF land.

2 months till Opener for the King

After much discussion and thought, I'll be heading to the North Maine Woods this fall. Hoping for many more sights like this:

2 months till Opener for the King

Well that's a pretty convincing argument from someone who's experienced all the options. What's foliage like in North Maine during that time frame? Hunting mostly along roads or has it thinned out enough to get into the woods? I have only driven through Maine once, no hunting experience there.

2 months till Opener for the King

A consideration is that most public land is closed to NRs for that week. It'd have to be private or reservation land. Makes the pheasant option less attractive at face value. Might need to do more digging

2 months till Opener for the King

I'm kicking around a 5-6 day bird trip this year around Columbus Day. A few possibilities: 1) Grouse/woodcock in the U.P. of Michigan or N. Wisconsin. 2) Grouse/woodcock in central/north Maine. 2) Pheasants in North Dakota. The grouse locations are about a 12-14 hr drive. The ND pheasant...
