We just did a similar trip. Western MT through Portland and down the OR coast to the redwoods, past Yosemite and back through Nevada. We stayed at hipcamps for most of it. Thanks for the tips, guys! We actually ended up at lake Mary Ronan and did more swimming and screwing around than fishing. Only a couple bites on the weekend, but I wouldn’t say we really gave it a go.- TRS_Montana

.270 as an elk round
I shoot elk with a 150 gr, buddy shoots them with a 130 gr. I think he has killed more, but I don’t know whose got a better avg. a good shot with any .270 round will kill an elk. Depending on your kid’s size and flinchyness, I’d go 130- TRS_Montana
