    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

These are my biggest concerns as well. So the question is how do we get mule deer hunting out of the rut without really screwing up some pretty decent elk hunting and block management? I would say just have a general mule deer season for a couple weeks, then turn it into LE for the majority of...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

Idaho had the same issue with elk. NR’s could go anywhere general so tons of hunters wound up in the same areas. A couple years ago they capped units for NR’s and it sounds like things have improved significantly. Doesn’t seem unreasonable.

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

I'd argue that the issue isn't what archers need to give up, it's how we can make something suitable for everyone, maintain an "opportunity state" because FWP will always hang it's hat on that, but keep that opportunity out of the rut and relieve public lands so the animals are willing to stick...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

See post #363, I did post my plan if it were up to me. I agree changes are way overdue, but not bringing up valid concerns for discussion and living in an echo chamber isn't a great way to approach change.

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

Couldn't the argument be made that this plan actually increases pressure on deer and elk? There's no dead period to allow things to settle down on public land. Rifle seasons for antlered elk and deer increase pressure dramatically. It's unfair to compare that to shoulder seasons and October...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

Well we can agree to disagree I guess then. All I know is a lot of landowners that lease out, do it in part to avoid the headache of dealing with hunters. Increasing that headache doesn't seem dubious or trivial to me, especially with how important block management is to all of us. I do agree...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

Most BMA's that I know of refuse to allow shoulder seasons. This takes rifle season from 10/1-11/25, so hunter participation, knocking on doors, evening phone calls, etc. would increase drastically. 92 day hunting isn't a change, but the participation level would be a huge change.

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

Was there any discussion on how landowners and Block participants would view a 92 day straight hunting season? With the number of hunter complaints these days, I think the increase in the number of rifle days, which will drastically increases hunter participation and landowner complaints...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

So, there's a couple themes coming up that might need more compromise to get all parties to agree. One, the intent of this plan is to reduce pressure on the resource, but I'm not sure how that happens when it increases the number of huntable days, has no "dead" period to give public lands a...

    Montana General Season Structure Proposal

First off, thanks to everyone involved for taking the time and effort for sitting down and putting this forward. I fully agree with the intent of what this proposal is aiming for and yes, it's time for some kind of change. However, there are a few things that concern me. First is not having...

Montana - Time to Shake it Up?

I get that and if MT were to adopt WY’s management that could happen. I just think realistically that’s a stretch chopping off a full month of MT’s season anytime soon. I think it’s gonna take more baby steps than a complete 180, but I could be wrong.

Montana - Time to Shake it Up?

What I’m saying is if we were to completely end deer hunting in November, the elk distribution problem would only get worse, people are gonna hunt whatever’s open. Giving folks the option to archery hunt deer instead would maybe lessen that blow.

Montana - Time to Shake it Up?

Good point. Not only are the issues statewide, but they overlap species. If we tell the Thanksgiving hunters they can no longer chase mule deer, they’re just gonna put all their focus on elk, which is busy enough as is. I’m almost more inclined to go with weapon restrictions to keep folks spread...

    Fwp December commission meeting

This is a really good point, it would be a very slippery slope going this route. Ideally, the biologists would put together a justification for the tag quota, but that would mean the commission would actually have to let them do their jobs. You could base it on total acres of public, develop...

    Fwp December commission meeting

100% agree with this. Current system only exacerbates the distribution problems. Take the Highwoods, you have 400 archery permits and 3 public access points - 1 on the west end, one on the east end, and a FS road down the middle. You couldn’t ruin a unit faster if you tried.
