CO front range fitness: Mt Morrison ed.

42 isn’t slow. I got 32:34 last year with a pretty light pack - we were hiking to the top that day. But my vo2 max isn’t likely to get much better with age!

I guess it’s not apparent is it! They are around the flatirons, green, Bear and such. And one at rabbit mountain

How’d it go? I have wanted to go sub 30min on that badly but haven’t quite made it happen. If I don’t soon I probably never will!

Cool to see this one getting some traction! I gotta get down there - it’s just a bit of a drive out of my way that I have squeeze in. Been getting some other good training hikes in closer to me though - a bit odd to repeat but since you are all in the area I will share anyway.

You could bag a 14er while you're here too...

Can’t wait to give it a go! I’ll try to get an early training cycle time in soon and then a comparison/fast time in at the end of summer. I like the light and heavy pack versions. #20/60 sounds good. (Wish I was a 250lb Viking of a man to make my pack feel lighter but it is what it is).

119th house rules - transferring federal land

Most western states already have a mandate to generate revenue with state lands and it’s very likely if they were to get BLM or other public lands they would ultimately be sold off - especially when you consider states don’t do deficit spending and nobody likes taxes. There’s a lawsuit filed by...

    Long term hunt planning

As a Colorado resident, at this point in my life (2 youngish kids), the in-state annual opportunities generally exceed my time opportunities. As such I have yet to start looking seriously to out of state tags and building points - especially with the cost discrepancies in resident v non res tags...

    Experience with Durston Tents?

I have the x mid 1 and the solid x mid 2 - more nights in the 1. It’s a great tent - super livable for the weight. I have not encountered any crazy conditions in either - some modest snow and decent winds and they have been fine. I have the inners for both and have used them with a without...

Getting this elk thing figured out

He was a was an odd bull - a big 6(ish) on one side and basically 3 points on the other with no actual browtine. The spot he died in was wonderful - a nice flat open meadow, shaded for most of the morning and nearby lots of all day shade. The weather was starting to look a little dreary and...

Getting this elk thing figured out

As night fell the bugles kicked off and continued off an on for a lot of the night - the moon was nearly full that night. They sounded like they were just below me and I could hear fighting in the middle of the night. I was pretty much thinking I could probably shoot one from my tent in the...

Getting this elk thing figured out

At this point we decided to head back to the glassing knob. We had too many options we thought going into the evening. We could see if anything fed out onto the cleanings behind the glassing knob, we could glass for elk to feed out in the lower clearings below and to our left, or we could...

Getting this elk thing figured out

I returned to camp and we decided to drop off into this northern section and get up on a knob that would put us into striking distance of a few of the different areas he had seen elk. I contemplated leaving my own camp thinking maybe this area was too far for me to kill anything myself Wednesday...

Getting this elk thing figured out

After some excellent pizza and a beer our friend headed home and the two of us headed back up to the trail head. We loaded up packs for a two night effort with the plan to get up on and camp on the ridge above the general area the 6x6 had been in in though further down drainage in the hopes...
