Got an email today from my friend, Outfitter, PH, Taxidermist in South Africa.
He has found us a reasonably priced Suni hunt! Hell yeah! Done struck out twice without even seeing one of the little buggers! Third time bound to be a charm!
Also have a chance at Civet Cat, Genet Cat and Honey Badger with a good chance to improve on my Red Duiker!
I am stoked!
Some time in July...

Wow! I had to Google Image to see what the heck you were talking about. They are pretty animals. How many times have you been over there to hunt and what have you taken so far?

Geee....do my intials spell sunthin??? I like thighs too...

Went to Africa for my "once in a lifetine hunt" in 2001...Friends from Atlanta area talked me in to going with them....I was 58...booked my second hunt before we left Zimbabwe!! Been every year since then. Cheaper than what I would want to do in US or CN and with a higher success ratio.
Back to your question about how many....counting culling operations I have been invited on and killing for bait...over 100...different subpecies is around 55, but I have yet to be able to afford an Ele and won't dart a Rhino until I take the Ele! I really really want to kill an Ele!!! What a magnificent beast! Come on stock market or refinance mortgage!

You live in some different world than most, I suspect. Can safely say i have no idea what a Suni is.
Have heard a lot about Sunnis though.

Dart a Rhino? yep we are in different worlds. But it is always great to see exuberance when it comes to hunting, whatever the game.

Darting a Rhino can be done for under 10K, killing a Rhino is over 100K!
Got to be a rush to get within 30 or so yds on a Rhino and dart him then hope he runs away rather than toward!!

10K or 100K...whew!!! What is it that you want to hunt in the US that costs more than that??? For that kind of money you could hunt whatever you wanted, go cougar hunting with one of the fellas here and still have a chunk left.

Just ribbin' ya. To each his own!! I would love to go to Africa someday. But I can't imagine dropping that much coin.

You bring up a good point and some compelling math. Although it generates a side question, for me. Is "darting" a rhino hunting? Or is it sport, or both. To me it is a sport of sorts but hard to see it as actual hunting which I have figured always included trying to kill the intended quarry. I love hunting as much as anybody and I could sure see getting a big charge out of stalking within close range of a rhino, but I'd sooner shoot pictures than dart it. What is the point of darting, exactly? And this is an earnest question since I know nothing about it--just do not understand the concept. Again, different worlds, different strokes, all good. If it is too scarce or expensive to kill, why not "bag" a live photo of it doing its thing and walk away?

I take it you've never gutted a darted rhino? Thats where it becomes hunting......

I don't disagree with your prices. However, it also must me noted that nearly everything on your list can be done with a bit of luck in the draws, some research, and lots of hard work. True, it may not have the 100% "success", but in many ways I'd think it'd be just as rewarding. I know I'll never forget the bighorn sheep and moutain goat hunts I've done...and I didn't even have the tag!

That said, I do plan on going to Africa someday for the experience. Like I've said many times, the greatest part about hunting is that you can make it what you want...

1 pointer, at 67, one artificial knee and the other one arthuritic and degenerative arthur in my neck, I can no longer do the Mountain hunts like I wish I could even with an outfitter. Most of my Elk and Mule deer fell to exactly what you are talking about and doing research....most of my strikeouts came from there too! Many of the hunts I listed REQUIRE an NR to have a guide or Outfitter these days and costs are way more than the first time I used one to kill my Dall. But there are indeed OYO Adventures still out there.
Khunter, as a matter of a fact I have pics of two different Bull Rhinos made from under 15 yds and it was a rush to stalk and get that close on those nasty high fence farms smallest of which was over 50,000 ac. It was such a rush, that I now want to put one down! Since I don't have $125,000 to kill one, a "green" hunt seems like a viable alternative. While out, blood, DNA samples, etc are done and if not previously done, a micro-chip implanted in horn to hope to catch fugging poachers. Rhinos are endangered in most of their original range due to poaching. My five figure fee to dart one will help research. PLUS give me a hellva rush to stalk in close and hope it runs away rather than toward when stuck!!!

here ya go TiT. don't have the pictures of the kittys anymore. they were on the other computer. up in flames.

will take pics of your museum when we come down and post them for you. if the card is big enough to get all the critters.

will let you give the descriptions of the pics.

TOM- I can understand that physical ability can affect how/where one hunts. You weren't making that argument in the previous post, you were just talking money and success rates (which they way you wrote it I would suggest 'kill rate' as being more appropriate. If you enjoy what you're doing, I'm happy for you. I'll probably wait until I'm a bit older before I go to Africa, if I ever make it. Still have too many mountain/wilderness hunts I want to do.

PS- From my extimation, only 40% of the hunts you listed require a guide.

1_pointer, you may be right on % that actually require a Guide especially for Residents who can actually scout....pretty tuff for me to be able to afford an extra week or so in AZ to find a good Elk or AK to find a good Dall even with kill ratio and trophy animals posted on a web site....I pretty much OYO only for ducks and turkeys these days....and a white tail or two for meat.
Only point I was trying to make on Africa is to folks who say they can't afford it and then spend more in NA for outfitted hunts or on their leased or owned land.....I had decided Africa would never happen for me and then some buddies talked me into being the fourth on a double 2X1 hunt when I was 58....been back every year since! Love it!

TLC, you may even make pics of my pics of Bull Ele's and Rhino's!!! Maybe my lotto luck is turning...won $7 on my $5 Wed Powerball....if that will progress geometrically, we will all go soon! BTW, one of my all time favorite pics is of that group trying to stuff the 14-foot Croc into that old Toyota! That is totally typical "real" Africa !
For those that are scratching their head, the first pic in TLC's second post to click on is an African tree stand---machan---two flites of ladder from limbs and branches and lashed limbs for a floor with papyrus reed for front and sides....gives a whole new meaning to a "tree stand"...this one happened to be a 45-minute walk but only a cuppla hunnert yds were in thigh deep swamp water......hunting Sitatunga but struck out for the second time....bastards!!
