Anyone hunt the Shirley Mountain or Chalk mountain area in the last couple years ? I have not been there in the last 5 years. Are there still huntable deer numbers ?

I have a friend who hunted that area last year. They said it was not good.......only shot one small buck out of 7 guys.

The above post sounds like the general concensus of all the deer units in Wy.I may try and draw 89 with my points this year in special draw.Time to start using my points with the legislature there trying to make all these NR changes for the worse. How many points do you have to burn to hunt that unit??have you checked last years success rates in those units?I think Eastmans usually has them if you subscribe along with average hunting days needed to reach those success rates.if those numbers they post are true, you can learn a lot about a unit with just that imfo
I ALWAYS call the area biologist before chosing a deer unit in Wy.They are usually real good with their advise.I only ever talked with one that was a complete d@#$

***All the stats you're talking about are right on the G&F website and are a lot more accurate than other sources that you mentioned at times. You're also good until the 2016 season since no changes will be introduced until the General Legislative session is held in 2015. Any changes they would pass would not take effect until the 2016 season. So essentially you can buy another PP and wait until 2015 or burn them now in a unit you can draw.

I used to hunt the Shirleys a lot but haven't been back for quite a few years. It's close to miracle mile and and is not known for huge deer. I got tired of dealing with the Colorado roadhunters with the freezer in the back of their pick up. They just drive up and down the roads all day long. We were headed home one afternoon and one of the guys passed us going 60mph on the dirt road and stopped in the middle of the road a mile up and him and is partner shot two fork horns from the road. I learned two things that day.. . I hate some so-called "sportsman" and road hunting does occasionally work. I wish I would have reported them that day for shooting from the road. Good luck with that mess should you choose to go down there.

After making a couple more phone calls I ended up applying for region J instead of D. Neither are great but I think I will try J this year,if nothing more than to see new territory.

That are is popular with people and that makes it hard to hunt. We got letters that asked us to take a poll as to wheather we thought it might make a better limited quota area, I don't remember the Wyoming Game and Fish EVER asking anyone about something like this. They usually just do and and tough noogies to anyone that doesn't like it. Most people here get in there for Archery Deer and Elk and do a lot better as well as get the big ones.
