Timberdoodles! Late in the evening on our Deer lease they fly out of the woods to land on some of the roads. Very acrobatic suckers will give you a heart attack! LOL Congrats! John

Very nice! Would love to shoot one of them. I've only seen a handful ever here in IN.

Great job Pat! Give the lad a fist pound for me, you will have to bring him and the pup up here someday to give him a real treat on grouse and doodles.

I saw one today as i was prestaking some traps for tomorrows opener. Thought about trying for it but left it be. How are they for table fare?

Nice one!
They are such a challenging bird to shoot, we get quite a few over in the UK, if you shoot a left and right you become a member of a very exclusive club in the UK.
The annoying last year was a bird flushed out of a hedge, up went my gun, wood @#)(# down, i waited a couple seconds, broke the gun and stuck another shell in and out came another, boom and i get another, gutted as that was my best ever chance of getting a left and right.
The best advice i was ever given was 'shot em before they shit'!
Cheers
Richard

When I had my Beagles and ran rabbits every weekend we would have either Timberdoodles or Quail come up at our feet, I shot out of self defense! Man, we had 23 Beagles and all the River Land to hunt, back then 300 Rabbits was a average season. Best day 42 and a Coyote! John

Hell.. woodcock are easy to hit. Anyone who thinks that they are hard to hit need to try ruffed grouse once:D

That brings back some great memories. I grew up in central Wisconsin and loved hunting those long beaks. Many times while hunting in the tag alders, the shots were so close all you would end up with was a beak or wing! Congratulations to you and your son!

He'll never forget that day! I know I never did. Congrats to them both.
