Wood prices!!

Tell me about it - I just replaced 22 sections of roof decking on my house and garage.

Know anywhere I can find 12’ of treated deck board (12 total feet). Everywhere I’ve checked in central IA is out of stock of all lengths.

It crazy but timber prices are at an all time low. We want to cut timber on my property and its not worth it right now.

Stupid high prices for commercial lumber & materials.
Glad I have a mill near me with decent prices.

Needed some 10' treated posts over the weekend, $28/ea. Ended up finding them used on FB marketplace for $3. Having to get creative to complete the pre-hunt projects!

Was going to put up a new garage but my builder jacked the price up 4000 bucks last week.also said he can't get material until after the 1st of the year.

Canada produces a huge % of our lumber thanks to the "Greenies".
Anyway, there still blocked from coming down with said lumber.
There used to be a lumber mill in every small city in western Montana and an aluminum plant now NOTHING>>>!

2x4 studs were $5.89 at Lowes last week, up from $2.59 the previous time I bought them there...

*EDIT* I went to Lowes after posting this morning, 2x4 studs are now up to $6.16 😲

try ordering a stove or fridge right now.
I got lucky with a freezer last week. Appliance store in town got a few in last week. Didn’t seem like terrible prices but I’d rather have it than not with a beef at the processor and 4 deer tags in our pocket.

My brother in law and I have been building a cabin for the past year and are close to being finished. We need 5 sheets of OSB 7/16 and at the closest rural lumber yard he paid $38.00 per sheet. He paid $12 per 2x6x12. I would not have paid that. We needed a 40amp Square-D Homeline double pole breaker for a heater and I had one hell of a time finding it. Grainger was price gouging and wanted $35. Ebay was worse and wanted $99 plus $60 shipping. I stopped at our local true value and they had 1 left for just under $12. Both Lowes and Home Depot said Square-D breakers would not be restocked until December at the earliest, if they got them at all.

Would love to see pictures of the build!

Our county building code enforcement department just approved some alternate sheeting materials just because if the limited availability and cost of osb. Its crazy

Keep in mind that up until recently there was a glut of harvest able lumber coming out of British Columbia. Now the easy luber in Bc is gone. Add that to trumps new wood tariffs of 20% and covid. Sad face.
The timing is bad because construction is really helping the economy right now.
The tariffs are also bringing logging back to the southern US so good and bad.

I have holes in my roof and siding from the derecho. I'm definitely worried about building supplies. I've been scrambling all summer to get the cedar decking to replace my deck and have most of that done when the storm hit.

Elkfever2, you might try Story City Building Supply. They are a smaller yard, and get cleaned out periodically by contractors, but I've gotten lucky there in the recent past.
