Wisconsin gun opener, I hate it, so i go elsewhere to have the forest to myself.
One last hunt for the year, one of my favorites. I kind of had a streak of first day luck this year. That kept up.
Chased some birds, and the flush numbers were off the charts but my retrieval rate sucked without having a dog along. I even had a nice rooster run and crawl into a giant cottonwood log never to be seen again Breaking wings on ditch chickens just don't cut it without a dog. The creek bottoms held brush so thick I could not even crawl into it to look for a couple after they ran in there after they hit the ground.
The Grouse were a nice change of pace. I had a couple in the bag when I stopped to take a drink along a creek bottom and another flew across a field and landed 20 feet away in a tree. I watched him for a couple minutes preen himself up and made some calls to other birds. I enjoyed watching him and I actually felt sorry for how stupid he was and just walked away from him
One evening a freind stopped by my camp and said his daughter shot a whitey and they jumped it once before it got dark. I offered to help look for it in the morning and when we found it it was not a pretty sight. The dogs took it down, still alive by the looks of the blood sprayed all over the creek bottom area. There was nothing left but a head and rib cage. How many yotes will it take to do that I wonder? I mean it was meatless!
