Seems looting happens in other countries during disasters.. Haiti and Katrina are examples...But not in Japan???

I'm no expert, but simply put most of the Asian countries have no tolerance for crime of any sorts. The penalties are swift and extreme for the general public(Mafia and powerful gangs probably pay for a pass).I like this attitude of no sympathy.

I lived in Seoul for a couple of years and know someone who left their purse on a bench. . .came back an hour or so later retracing her steps and found it right on the bench still. My experience is that the Confucian culture that dominates life in far eastern societies looks upon stealing as being the lowest of the low.

Thats a good one, Randy. Been listening to the old "Cheech & Chong" albums, I see. Another thought, I bet when this is all over, they get it cleaned up, without a trace, and rebuilt quickly. They are an industrious people. Individually they won't be standing in a line for a handout, or waiting for someone else to do it for them. Knute

Becasue their people don't believe in benefiting from the work of others like many her here in the USA who would rather steal or get a wellfare/unemployment check than to go out and get a job. We live in a society full of freeloaders and it has become socially acceptable to do so.

I believe alot of what you are seeing is a society that is taught early on to respect the Feelings of others as they are often in cramped conditions. Family is taught to the young as an obligation to take care of their Parents and their Grandparents. Here we have been taught to seek out the easiest way to make a buck and if you can't take care of a one night stand that give it to Granny and she will raise it. We see it in our culture, I have overheard stupid statements about what people can get if they do this or state this to Social Programs. This is not a Racist remark, just what you see out there in the real world. John

The wife and I were noticing the relief efforts and donations appear non-existant compared to Haiti. Thats all you saw everywhere for a month. I have seen very little of this for Japan, although I'm sure it's happening. Anybody have any idea if other countries had relief efforts/telethons/concerts for the US from Katrina?

Businesses there take the same attitude as the people. In the US before any money goes to the victims, it has to fund the top brass of the "relief organization" as well as the many layers underneath. Grocery stores here increase the prices of necessity goods because of supply and demand...over there, they are giving away necessities. Here, businesses run solely for maximizing profit, Japan's businesses run for longevity. It's just an entirely different culture from the bottom to the top. There are many positives to a society like that but one negative I have noticed is they are too trusting of the government. Our scientists have been recommending any US citizen to be 50 miles away from the nuclear reactors, their government have only evacuated 8 miles away (as of yesterday), and the people are fine with that. The good part...they listen to and trust their government...the bad part...they listen to and trust their government.

In 1986 Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone made a statement that might explain it....

Of course if I was to say it I'd be called a racist

TOKYO — Japanese newspapers Tuesday quoted Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone as saying that blacks, Puerto Ricans and Mexicans have pulled down the level of learning in the United States.

However, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, Yoshio Hatano, said Nakasone was quoted "completely out of context."

"The prime minister said, in effect, that the United States was a multiracial society and had been making great progress as a democracy, overcoming educational, social and other issues associated with such a background," Hatano said in a formal statement. "In no sense has he ever implied that the level of intelligence is low in the United States."

Stay on the Porch if ya can't run with the Big Dogs. LOL John

During his last term in office, he also gained notoriety among the various non-Japanese ethnic groups in Japan (particularly the sizeable Korean minority) for proclaiming that Japan's success was because it did not have ethnic minorities, like the US. He then clarified his comments, stating that he meant to congratulate the US on its economic success despite the presence of "problematic" minorities.

...sounds like something Dubya or Joe Biden would say.

From the pictures I have seen, the reason there is no looting is because there is nothing left to loot from.

Come on, I was 15 in 1986 thats a pretty good that I can remember the controversy as a teenager from 25 years ago ;)

I also remember the images of New Orleans after Katrina hit, and the images of Iowa in 2008 after they had massive flooding. Two very different behaviors occured when a tragedy happend to both locations. I was at Keesler AFB, MS a couple of years after Katrina and the folks there were quick to point out that they took the brunt of the storm but the behavior we saw in New Orleans didnt occur there in Biloxi. In fact we were warned against going to New Orleans due to all the violence there.

I'm not one for political correctness, I'm just saying what I saw....
