Tim Hearald plans to air video of his
Cape Buff hunt where he shot his PH! It is to be a lesson on gun safety and supposedly all revenue will go to a PH relief fund!
Is this a good idea?? I am undecided!

I think so, if he has the guts to let others learn from his MAJOR mistake, I think it shows a lot of character. That is only true if he isn't profitting from the episode! Now if he is making money on it, he is a scoundrel to the core! I would also assume the PH is "allowing" him to do this. If the PH doesn't want him to, and he still is, then again he is a scoundrel to the core!

I thinks its a good idea. Good reminder for everyone. Hopefully it will make enough money so that his PH can get his medical bills and lost income covered.

Great idea.

Safety is no accident. Somehow the safety was off the gun and something engaged the trigger while a hazard was in the line of fire. This is a teachable moment to reinforce safety to all of us. Do not take the safety off until ready to engage a target. Finger on the trigger should only be once have the target identified and you are aware of people and hazards along the potential line of fire.

No guarantee, of course. Barrels blow up. Safeties fail. People walk in front of the shooter.

Hope the PH recovers and is able to continue their career.

I don't personally know the PH but understand he has given permission. The PH is known by two PH's I hunt with and they say he is a great hunter and all around good guy.
I think Hearld often appears on Boddington's show....maybe....I have seen him several times on TV but don't remember what show....

Below is a link to a biography of Tim. He hosts the show "Trijicon's Outdoor America" on the Outdoor Channel, which I never watch, although I knew of him from his writings in various magazines. The way he has described the "accident" is that they were tracking an unwounded Cape Buffalo bull and all of a sudden they heard it crashing though the thick stuff they were in and it was on them in a heartbeat. He stated he was raising his gun to shoot it as it came straight at him and took off the safety as he was doing so. At the same time he stated he was backing up and tripped with the resulting fall causing him to pull the trigger and shoot basically sideways hitting the PH in the shoulder with a .458 solid. The PH had already shot at that same instant and put one in the charging animal from where he was standing causing the bull to break off the charge. From my perspective, he should be paying all the bills and lost wages for the PH until the guy is back making money in his profession, regardless of how he gets the money to do so, and be very thankful it was a solid or the guy would more than likely be dead.

Not sure if it should end up on TV, but at least Tim Herald is owning his mistake.

My heart sinks for the PH, his life will never be the same.

Not so sure about that, as those PH guys are tough SOBs and very dedicated to what they do. When Tim visited him in the hospital a couple days after the mishap they already scheduled a continuation of their hunt next August!

It's not a movie.

The guy was shot in the back, a .458 bullet travelled through his body and exited out his shoulder. The physical damage will take years to recover from.
