When is an ATV NOT an ATV?

Legislation is in a House committee that will define a Utility Type Vehicle as basically any vehicle that does not meet the definition of an ATV, mototcycle or snowmobile. Included in the UTV definition would be the Yamaha Rhino, Polaris Ranger, dune buggies (including the new Ridge Runner being built in Nampa) and Kawasaki Mules to name a few. These vehicle are NOT legal for use on ATV designated trails, either before or after this legislation.

The reason these vehicle can not legally use an ATV designated trail is their size. They are all wider than an ATV and most have a longer wheelbase. Using those machines on ATV trails degrades the trailbed, esentially turning the ATV trail into a roadway. There are shared use areas such as desert roads, logging and fire roads, and sand dunes. To help manage these "Utility Type Vehicles" we need to define what they are and where they can go, then provide a way for them to support those areas as we do with the Off Highway Vehicle sticker.

You can check out the legislation here.
You can get an overview of state regulations on our Rules and Regulations page.
