hey guys was out scouting again here in the Oregon Coast Range and i found a bull on my2nd trip out after work last evening. its 9 june and he is already a 4x4 but his fronts or G1's looked 7 or 8 inches already. he was 250 yds away feeding in the open watched him for 30 minutes till dark it was awesome . im still learning about elk and this is my 1st summer ever scouting and getting out and around elk to be with them and watch them. just wondering when elk are fully developed.....????

Where I am in NM they will finish antler growth in late July/Aug. usually.
Saw a full sausage 6x6 yesterday morning with some room to grow still and a couple dink spikes in evening that were barely 6" long.
Saw a bull with shedding velvet in Sept last year....

Antlers....on elk & deer,cows & goats grow horns.

im feeling like a TARD, i dont think when im with my friends that hunt elk ive ever called them horns but this morning i did . ha ha ha  whatever . thats life and i love it , have a great day

Antlers, horns who cares? Everyone knows what you are talking about.

They are done in Wyoming by mid-July. They harden though early August, and the mature bulls are cleaning off velvet starting mid-August.

I never figured that one out either Chris.
Young bull is a young bull to me. 3x,4x,etc. One with any non typical growth is non typical,or not even.
But then again what do I know.....I never call a 4x4 deer a 8 point or count the eye guards..................lol

hank4elk,

Different perspective.

I have always called a 4 x 4 with eye guards a 10 pt. Depends on the area where you started hunting. Your dad or early hunting mentor molds you.

I still have am confused about a 3 point or 5 point. They are still the same deer.

Not universal.

Hope you have a good season. Enjoy it!

Interesting, that's roughly the same as Red deer stags in the UK

Cheers

I've seen hard horned (that is what I call them anyhow... :p) Roosevelt bulls on August 1. Always figured that mature bulls are done growing in mid July.

A couple of years ago we saw a herd of bulls in a field in Alpine AZ in mid July. They looked like they had fully developed antlers because some were huge but they were all still in full velvet.

mature bulls will begin as early as first week of August to mid August when majority will rub velvet off. The growing part stopped long before they took velvet off.. with a mature bull what you see the first week of July is pretty much what you get.

I was just looking this up the other day and I came to the conclusion end of June to first part of July

thanks for all the input guys, yes even you FAIR CHASE :D, as this is my first year investing a lot of time in woods before hunting starts this fall,as i continue to see some bulls over the summer , i just wanted to have a general idea of what and when. i really just enjoy the process of learning and growing as a hunter in the field or otherwise. i will be hunting in a 3 point or better unit this Nov, ive never shot a branch bull yet, so 3 points and im GOLDEN
