What Stress?

I have the benefit of having State holidays off, and I work 4 ten hour shifts. Thus, with Veteran's Day being Monday, I had myself a 3 day week. Maybe it was the condensed work week resulting in the 30 hours to get 40 hours worth of work done, the nature of the challenges I faced, or (more than likely) my mindset. Nonetheless, by the end of the week I found myself pretty stressed and needing some time in the mountains.

I took the gun and a set of rattling antlers for a walk this morning. Fog prevented me from doing any rattling from my first spot. I climbed higher and found a general area I thought doable for a rattling sequence. I spent 10-15 minutes looking for the best spot, with relationship to the terrain, cover and considering the wind. I got my rattling antlers ready and my gun set up. Just as I was preparing to reach for the antlers and start, a cruising buck popped up to and across the bench I was on. I gave a quick grunt call, and he froze, quartered very slightly towards me. He never took another step; the 7mm Rem Mag and the 168 Berger did their job.

Though I now had some work to do, I can assure you, I no longer felt stressed but instead felt a deep appreciation for the buck I harvested, the opportunities I have and the amazing beauty of the world I'm blessed to be a part of.
