Kenetrek Boots

What makes this sound (link to video)?

You can try the Merlin bird app. It is pretty good at identifying birds based on sound.

That app says Great Horned Owl, which makes sense to me since we see and hear those on a regular basis. However, I am no bird expert and the long-eared looks similar from what I can tell. Maybe their calls are similar as well?

If you live in town GHOW is far more likely, especially if you hear their call regularly. I've been around long-eared more than great-horned, so it was the first thing I thought of. In general, you won't often see long-eared unless you're looking for them. Long-eared calls are single, even, and slow paced "hoo."

If you tap the green menu button on the upper left corner you can choose to "explore birds" and search for long-eared owl to listen to their calls and compare.

Well, we're in the ex-urbs - 2.5 acre lots, so not exactly "in town."
