What killed this elk?

I glassed this up from across a canyon at work yesterday. I thought I was seeing a big fork on a muley rack, but no such luck. This bull looked like it had only been dead a couple of days, and I jumped three other spikes near the head of the drainage about 1/2 mile away.

Being on a trail as it is... looks like an ATV ran over it and a Lion is feeding on it. John

I was gonna guess a bear, because it looks like the kill has been partially buried.

Upon further inspection, I'd say it suffocated in a pile of fur, rocks, leaves, and dirt hump

Might be a simple winter/spring die-off. I see some green grass, but it sure looks dry out there. I also noticed the duff and twigs raked over it too. Kitty chow?
