Some would argue we are both nut jobs, but that isn't the answer I was looking for, actually the answer is a book...

So I was at Books A Million the other day picking up a specific book. I typically like to peruse the outdoor section to see if anything catches my eye and on this occassion I notice a book entitled "The Grizzly Maze" by Nick Jans. Thumbing through the pages I quickly realize the book is about Tim Treadwell, you know, the guy featured on the Discovery Channel who lived among the bears. A few years ago he and his (shall we say) female friend became fertilizer for the Katmai Preserve.

Anyway, not too long ago a documentary (The Grizzly Man) came out on the big screen in select locations (Florida wasn't one of them) and I've really wanted to watch it. As sad as it may sound, I'm fascinated by this guy who I'm not sure is the dumbest of man-kind or has really big gonads. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the DVD or the Discovery Channel debuit, which ever one comes first. In the meantime, I buy the book.

I gotta say, Nick Jans does an outstanding job of providing balanced, unbiased information. The first two thirds of the book; devoted to Tim's Kalifornia lifestyle, his annual trips to Katmai and the attraction he had for the bears and into the illustrative attack is awesome. The last portion wasn't terribly bad, but did drag on a bit.

Buried towards the end of the book is a little blurp about some photos of a pseudo "World Record Grizzly Bear"...a total surprise to me. Kinda caught me off-guard, but was flattering nonetheless.

If you are addicted to "grisly" stories, I recommend checking this book out. It'll be worth another read right before I head out to the AK peninsula (just down the coast from Katmai) this spring for my brown bear hunt.

I haven't. This is about the guy who lived out of the bus, right?
