Westport,Wa black rockfish & lings, Brownlee crappie & cats

We had a break in our fishing and irrigation schedule so my wife, dad & I made a quick trip over to the coast. Nice to get out of the 90+ heat and over to the 50-60 range. We all 3 tried for salmon on Monday but didn't get any keepers. Tuesday dad & I went for bottom fish while the wife crabbed off the docks. My 89 yr old dad did really good. The boat we went on has a chair that mounts to the rail. That's the only way he can stand there and steady himself. We had a great day and brought home a lot of fish.
I hadn't been home 10 minutes when the phone rang for a charter. Thursday I was back on Brownlee and got a visiting couple on some good fishing, 129 crappie & 7 cats.

Now that would be a trip to remember. I've never had black rockfish, how are they tablefare wise?

Really good as fish & chips style or on the grill. I really like the flavor of those saltwater fish. We fished for the rockfish after the lings. 21 anglers caught 24 lings. We used live flounder (sanddabs) that we first caught for the lings. Dad and I caught 7 lings and gave 3 away, limit is 2. It took about an hour to limit the boat with 210 rockfish on live anchovies. Amazing fishing!

I'll be in Ilwaco next week chasing Buoy 10 salmon and bottomfish offshore. I sure hope we do as well on Lings. Do you guide on Brownlee?

Yes, this is my 15th season guiding on Brownlee. Anxious to hear how you do at Buoy 10. I'm thinking about a September salmon trip there.
