After six years I was finally able to draw a south dakota any deer tag. I was fairly excited about it and was eagerly anticipating the season. I got out there a couple days early to do some scouting and find an area to set up camp. I found 3 bucks that I considered first day shooters on public land. Opening morning I hiked a few miles back into a small bowl, but the deer were nowhere to be found. Three coyotes showed up with one leaving, my first double on coyotes. I hiked back to camp ate lunch, jumped in the truck to check out some other areas but found nothing but trucks in all the likely looking deer areas. I found a small little piece of public with no-one on it. I grabbed my gun and binos and heeded out to look out over. I made it a hundred yards and glasses a small canyon and immediately turned up seven deer. After five minutes a good buck chased a doe up out of a draw toward the other deer bedded down on a small bench. He looked to be a mature 4×4 plenty big enough for me, I ranged him, dialed up the scope settled the crosshairs and squeezed the trigger.
