Veterans Day Coues Deer

Flying into the desert of Tucson Arizona on Thursday and looking out the window I couldn't believe that there were actually deer in this type of environment. Maybe rattlesnakes, coyotes, and javelina. But deer? After being picked up and greeted by Austin Atkinson owner of AAA Outdoors and also my guide. We headed south. I would be hunting in Unit 35B near the Mexican border.

The hunt was to start on Friday so Austin took us into a drainage to glass for the opener. We saw a couple doe that night as the shade started to overtake the landscape. They certainly have a fitting name "grey ghosts" as they disappeared into the hill side. I was up beat as I was only on the ground for a few hours and had already seen the ghost.

The first day after only glassing a couple hours we saw a very nice 8pt. 3 by 3 with eye guards western talk. Austin knew right away that this was a nice buck and we started our stalk. So I don't make this a novel. I blew it. Totally blew it would be more fitting. A first day coues deer buck wasn't to be. Guide did his job and failed to do mine.

We were seeing lots of deer, javelina, coyotes, and other critters which made the high temperatures worth bearing. Movement was good in the morning for a few hours and then a few hours before sunset. Occasionally we would see movement during the heat of the day too but no shooter bucks. Except another 8pt. at 100 yards that simply waved his tail at us and headed for Mexico. The sunsets were beautiful.

Four sunsets later and several miles and hours of glassing and here was Veterans Day. I told Austin I didn't recall ever shooting a big game animal of Veterans Day. Then I thought to myself how fitting it would be to end that after 32 years of hunting and coming from a military family of 9 who have all served. Then as if magically coming out of the desert two bucks appeared. A spike and a four point. I looked through Austin's spotting scope and said he looks great to me. After a short stalk we had our desert whitetail on the ground. I couldn't be more proud of an animal than I am my coues deer. He is a true trophy to me.

Before Austin and I started to take care of my trophy a Legacy rock was buried where he expired.

After quick and impressive work Austin had my fourth deer of the North American Deer Slam and 12th of the Super Slam taken cared off.

I am truly blessed to have won this hunt and harvested such an elusive and beautiful animal. I hunted in the Patagonia Mountains where Jack Oconner hunted his favorite animal. I can truly see why he admired them and the desert home they live in. I also gained so much respect for coues deer hunters and these tiny whitetails. GOD bless and good huntin'

Nice pics and congrats! I also sport the blue latex gloves, even if my brothers tease me relentlessly about it. :)

Thats outstanding bud, I'm glad you were successful.

Good luck with the rest of the slam.

Congrats! Looks like some very fun country to hunt. Well done.

Good luck on the 28. I had that dream, then tallied the costs... :(

congrats and great story. my dad's first buck came from 35b. it will always be a special place for me

Thanks again guys! As far as the other 17 big game animals to complete the Slam. If I don't take another animal towards it I've had an awesome career in hunting. I'm not a rich man so every animal I get I've earned it and worked hard for it. Financially I'm doing well as of right now but we all know that could change in the blink of an eye. I count my blessing every day and praise GOD. I enjoy the adventure more than I enjoy the harvest. Good huntin'

There is nothing more fun-or demanding-than a Coues deer hunt. Those little guys are incredible at disappearing. I jumped one once out from under a palo verde tree that she would have had to crawl into on her belly.

The best thing about them is that they are small and easy to pack out! Good job on the hunt.

Great attitude! I still think its a worthy goal. That said, I doubt I'll ever be able to afford some of the critters. Won't keep me from dreaming and schemeing thoug. :D

Great job hanging in there. Wears me down if go a couple of days without seeing mature animals. Headed to 36C at end of December and your pictures of 35B have me pumped. Any advice on dealing with the sharp vegetation? Was the chair helpful when glassing for long stretches of time?

Good job but I prefer you would have been skunked so we could go this winter with stick and string.I'm just kidding, kind of,congrats on your buck buddy and get ready for driving bears in a couple days

Your surely going at a much better time of the year. Hopefully the weather cooperates and you smoke a monster buck. As far as the vegetation there is no way around it. Still picking stuff out of me. However, a pair of light weight brush pants would work great. I never saw someone use a chair like that before. With the rocks, thorns, cactus, and fatigue of glassing for days and numerous hours the chair is worth it's weight in gold. I will be buying one, perferably in camo. :D! I used a similar one without legs that Austin had extra but this type would support your back better. Still that even helped tremendously. Best of luck to you on your hunt. Looking forward to your pics and report.

Scott I know you were putting the jinx on me! Although I wouldn't mind a bit hunting down there again but without 90 degree temps. Javelina can be hunted during the late hunts also and we saw well over 50. Don't know if you have to draw a tag on them or not though. My best guess is you do. Looking forward to some swamp bruins! :)

Without trying to insult anyones intelligence. Several years ago Super Slam knew that most working men and woman couldn't afford to do this huge feat. With wanting to get more hunters envolved with their organization they created the Super 10 and Super 25. By doing this their fan base increased tremendously. Myself being one of the new members. Still a great accomplishment and attainable by even the straight DIY hunters. Will both keep schemeing and dreaming 1_pointer :D Without dreams what would life be?

I know of the other Supers. Those are doable, and in fact a good stepping stone on to the 'big prize'. A guy I worked with in UT didn't quite get the Super Slam before he died, but IIRC he would have qualified for the Super 25. He did it by targeting a new species every other or third year. Took a while, but he got pretty close.

As to the part I highlighted, surely not worth going to work for! I work to live, not the reverse. Good luck and keep us apprised of your progress.
