Think about the Seattle area -- Bainbridge Island to be exact -- and you think scenic views and liberal-minded tolerance.

At least the killer views are still there.

The bucolic island's deep reputation for civility got a gut check this week during the annual Grand Old Fourth of July celebration.

That's when Jason Gilson, a 23-year-old military veteran who served in Iraq, marched in the local event. He wore his medals with pride and carried a sign that said "Veterans for Bush."

Walking the parade route with his mom, younger siblings and politically conservative friends, Jason heard words from the crowd that felt like a thousand daggers to the heart.

"Baby killer!"

"Murderer!"

"Boooo!"

EG,
It is not who reported this story that is important but it is the feeling of being betrayed by your own countryman. This soldier was just a piece in a very big machine. Whether you agree with calling volunteer soldiers baby killers and murderers, or not, look at where it has taken place. In a supposedly open minded, bleeding heart liberal, democratic strong hold.

Read the entire story and tell me if the liberal media condemned the personal attack or not? No, they went on to print the spin that it was just people saying Bush was a murderer. Tell me was the president marching this parade?

I find this attitude of blaming the service member disgusting. It further reinforces my notions of what kind of honor and decency many liberal democrats have. I have met and call friends many, many "normal" democrats however their party has been hijack by dipshits like the ones in Bainbridge Island. Sorry you can't see the unfairness and utter disregard for sacrifices made by people who tried to the right thing.

So make flippant comments if you want but I, for one, find the entire espisode a sad commentary of the leftist in this country.

NemontYouAreCorrect, ;)

I agree completely with you, and there is no way to defend somebody calling a returning serviceman a baby killer. It would be absurd for me to even try. (Yeah, who ever called them that has the Right to say that, but they don't have the obligation to say it, so they should just shut their mouth).

But (and there is always a but), we continually have posters here in SI who claim the "liberal media" doesn't report these things. That is where my comment went from. As I posted before, our KTVB.com has a "tribute to our troops" link and the likes.

I actually think the media has been very "pro-troops". That is one of the things Moore's film points out was the rush by the media to get behind Dubya caused many to forget to ask questions, but that is another topic.

In any event, if I offended you, I apologise.

EGyouaresometimeswrong,

Issues like this just make me touchy. Didn't mean to aim it at you in particular.

NemontIamRarelyWrong,

I just went and read the article for the 2nd time, and I still think the reporter's tone was that the actions by the name callers was wrong.

He does make some effort to try and explain the factors that may have lead to the behaviour, but I don't think ever condones the behaviour. Do you read it differently???

I read it that no matter what for the anti-Bush crowd the ends justify the means.

Dwyer added: "I believe (Jason's) mom when she said her son was called 'a murderer.' But I'm sure it wasn't so much directed at the kid as it was the president. A soldier with a sign represents that ."

The female announcer told Dwyer that some in the Bush-Cheney contingent in the parade seemed "militant."
so a soldier with a sign represents a murderer and baby killer? I would ask all the anti Bush people to explain that one to me.

I guess my beef here isn't with the author of the piece but with the people who did this sort of thing.

And people wonder why I wont go back to washington, Its assholes like this that make once a great state look like Ca.

The treehuggers and anti war people moved into washington at a rapid rate.
Would be nice to see some of these people get one way airline tickets to the middle east and a going away ass beating as well.

That is Bainbridge as a general rule... I did some work there and some of these people are absolutly stupid in their thoughts and actions. I will say that I was mistaken about the media....
1% of 1% of what actually goes on with their side gets reported, and that only stay's on the local level in a very quiet subdued performance, that way they can report that they are totally unbiased and fair in how they report the news...
