Since it seems like the entire state of California is burning right now (in addition to a horrible heat wave), my wife, some friends, and I decided to escape to the coast on Sunday to do a little diving (SCUBA for most of us, freediving for some others) at Fort Ross. Given that it is hunting season, I of course brought my gun, spear variety (this is very tongue in cheek; you can spearfish year round in CA, as long as you can survive the conditions). Conditions were just about perfect-small swell, slight breeze, 54F at depth, and 20-30' of visibility. I love the selectivity of spearfishing. I dont love the fact that I seem to be getting worse at it! Completely wiffed a shot at a nice ling cod.
First dive at right at an hour long to a max depth of 57'. Besides missing the ling cod, I was able to put an acceptable shot in on a nice cabezon and thus had dinner.
Second dive was 42 minutes to 41'. Before the dive, my wife requested I get a rockfish so we could have ceviche. Only took one shot and got myself a vermillion rockfish. I think they think my fins are their siblings...
My wife also found a nice scallop on this second dive that I was more than happy to harvest for her. In all a great day in the water and some fresh fish to boot. By only taking a couple of fish we can eat it all fresh (fish has a habit of going in the freezer and being forgotten around here), but also have an excuse to go out and get some more in a few weeks!
And the promised ceviche was had as well.
