Typical range for elk?

My sample size isn't big (5) but I have an average of about 33 yards. Longest was about 45 yards and closest of about 20 feet

I've got 2325 total yards shot for an average of 101.087, to be exact......................well close enough.

The terrain is the key. For years, my longest shot was a cow at 277 yards. THEN I started hunting the rim rocks of northern Wyoming last year. The game changed. The shot was 443 yards and was absolutely as close as we could get.

I think that in general, 200 yards appears to be pretty close to an overall average for most shots.

I've hunted for elk since the 50's. So far it's 41 bulls with a 30-30, and 1 cow with a muzzleloader. All at under 100yds.

Like some others here. I just still hunt the dark timber.

Longest 345 yards. Required a follow up though.
Shortest 30 yards.
Average across 7 bulls (2 archery), 124
Archery average 35 yds

I seem to have got all my elk in the timber as well... my shortest was 40 yard bow kill and longest was 100 yard rifle... average is 66 yards. Not that I will not take a 400 yard shot if the situation comes up, but it hasn't...

Volume 1 of Pat's hunting journal.... this one goes from 1968 to 1984.
