I am trying to take my son on our first hunting trip for turkey. I live in Tulare County, CA, does anyone know of an area around here that may be fruitful?

I'm not sure which one down there is Tulare....

Check out this link...http://pclfoundation.org/publications/sierranevada/tulare.html
In addition, each year they open the ranch to junior hunters from Fish and Game’s Wild Bird Heritage Program. Hunting is limited to quail and wild turkey through an agreement with Wilderness Unlimited, and numerous threatened and endangered species are under strict protection.

Also check out these opportunities...

Looks like there is a Fall turkey hunt up in Butte County. A drive, but probably a good chance of Success.

California Waterfowl's Hunt Program is part of our Hunting Heritage programs that give hunters of all ages the ability to hunt on lands otherwise unavailable to the general public.

California Waterfowl and the Department of Fish and Wildlife, through the Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Program, have partnered to offer special hunts on private lands. These opportunities are offered through CWA’s Hunt Program. The partnership will increase landowner participation and hunter access. The Hunt Program is an effort of CWA and SHARE to reverse the steady decline in hunter participation from a high of nearly 700,000 in the 1970s to less than 300,000 today.

The Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Program is a voluntary landowner incentive program administered by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Landowners may receive liability protection and compensation for providing public access to or through their land for recreational use and enjoyment of wildlife. The goal of the SHARE Program is to provide additional hunting, fishing and other recreational access on private lands in California. For more information please go to the SHARE website at:http://www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/share

Idle question-----why does anyone who owns firearms and likes to hunt even live in CA????

15.2 million acres of BLM Land
20 million acres of USFS land
(Tennessee is just under 27 million acres.)
1 million acres of Private lands management property administered by DFG
Year round hunting opportunities
Located in the Pacific flyway
OTC unlimited Deer tags
2 deer tags a year (3 species mule, Blacktail, and Pacific Hybrid)
Unlimited Pig tags
2 species of Turkey, 2 species of dove, 3 species of quail, pheasant, chukar, ducks,

An economy that allows us to pursue a business or career that in turn allows us to spend our spare time hunting. Both here and out of state.

Besides we have more, and Crazier Rednecks than Tennessee EVER had.

Robert, Check out Tejon to see if they still offer a Junior hunt...

Tejon Ranch Junior Only Turkey Hunt. Kern County. Info at Ph# (559) 243-4005 ext. 132 or 133.

Hunters must be junior hunters to apply or participate as a guest in this special hunt. This is a guided hunt. Tejon Ranch is located south of Bakersfield in the Tehachapi Mountains. The Department released the Merriam’s subspecies of wild turkey on the Tejon Ranch in 1989. They have adapted well to the habitat, and large flocks now populate the ranch. Tejon Ranch also provides surplus birds for stocking on public lands to provide for increased hunting opportunities.

The point is, most only hear the superficial about CA and have continued to build upon those stereotypes. We have great hunting, fishing and foraging not to mention the best produce in the world. There are crappy laws and politics everywhere, you do what you can, but in the end my firearm and or hunting pursuits have yet to be impeded.

Laffin. I'm right there with you Tom. According to what I have read drawing tags for most animals is a long wait. There is a reason not many NR's even waste time applying. Being able to hunt deer, hogs and turkeys is something that can be done almost anywhere in the southern US. Dealing with the smog, crime, gangs, inflated home prices, long commutes, hippies/hipsters, etc.. does not seem worth it. Not to mention the state is broke and the earthquakes. Gun laws are a joke. Because of that you could not pay me enough to live in California. I'm not big on crowds but to each their own. I'm sure there are some nice places once you get away from the majority of the people in that state.

I get it2Rocky. You live there because the girls are pretty!

JR has the pretty girl....

You make do with what you have. I enjoy my time in Wyoming in the fall for sure.

556, Earthquakes are fun. Shoulda seen the baby boom nine months after the Loma Prieta quake!

Funny enough, our crime rates are not that different than most states on a per capita basis. We'd have plenty of money if we didn't need to fund so many states that can't pull their weight.
