A bill was filed today to take control away from the state wildlife board and establish a continuous open season on deer in Virginia. Ms. March's contact info is below if anybody wants to reach out to tell her this is a terrible idea.

A BILL to amend and reenact §§ 29.1-506, 29.1-516, 29.1-529, 29.1-530.1, and 29.1-548 of the Code of Virginia, relating to hunting deer; establish continuous open season.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That §§ 29.1-506, 29.1-516, 29.1-529, 29.1-530.1, and 29.1-548 of the Code of Virginia are amended and reenacted as follows:

§ 29.1-506. Prescribing seasons and bag limits for taking fish and game.

A. After careful study of each species of wild bird, animal, and fish within the jurisdiction of the Board in cities and counties of the Commonwealth, the Board shall have the power to prescribe the seasons and bag limits for hunting, fishing, trapping, or otherwise taking such wild birds, animals, and fish by regulation adopted as provided in this article.

B. Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, the Board shall not prescribe any closed season for hunting deer except as provided in § 29.1-507.

Jeez, that’s crazy. I thought we were bad here in NJ where we have 6 months of deer hunting, with unlimited does in many zones, which I believe is way too much. Hope this stupid idea doesn’t gain traction!
 
Funny, I personally don't think this is a bad idea if set up properly and controlled correctly. I'm not sure who really should manage it, but if done right this would not really be that bad IMO.
 
They might as well. In our county we can hunt from Aug-March anyway.......not being serious that I support it.

I don't think it will pass but things get more relaxed evey year. I just wish they'd extend rifle season like the eastern side of the state. Five weeks of muzzleloader and 2 weeks of rifle should be switched.
