Any list of the best, or most influential movies ever made includes “The Birth of a Nation” a silent film made in 1915.
Very controversial because it’s blatant racism and racial stereotypes as well as graphic violence, it shows a very different viewpoint of the Civil War, reconstruction and Klu Klux Klan.
I was a bit apprehensive about trying to watch a 3+ hour silent film, but I must admit it was fascinating.

It was a giant blockbuster of it’s time costing $ ½ million to make in 1915.

Great effects and war scenes, good acting and a very detailed story.
The controversial part is the depiction of the freed black slaves as violent, primitive and drunk with new found power. They are shown talking advantage of the white minority while being controlled by evil northern politicians. The KKK are depicted as heroes, riding in to save the day.

Many of the scenes are absolutely comical by today’s standards and had me laughing out loud.
If you like classic silent films, and can stomach the films political position, I highly recommend it.
