...I've got a 980+ foot tower with ice falling off it.

We had a freezing rain storm blow through yesterday that put more ice on our tower at work than I've seen in years. It's been falling off all morning in pieces ranging from marble size all the way up to spear-like shards 6-7 feet long.

Our big metal garage has two or three man-sized holes knocked in its roof already, and there've been numerous impacts on the main building (luckily we have some protection up there)...the mail guy nearly got impaled when he stopped by...a few near misses on passing cars...a couple of the neighbors will be getting new roofs at our expense.

There's nothing like having to zig and zag like a quarterback just to get into your place of employment.

Darren, years ago I worked for Teltronic Towers. We built them big ol sticks all over the midwest. Mostly for Cable TV companies. When the big ice storms hit, if we were available they would have us climb the towers and break the ice off the antennas. They had them big ol tv antennas bolted to the tower, and they hung out about 6-8 feet. We would climb up breaking the ice on the legs on the way up, then beat the base of the antenna with a tower wrench to knock the ice off. The highest one I ever did was outside of Rodger City Michigan it was about 1180 ft if I remember correctly. We got hazardous duty pay for that $10 an hour.

Well...
The thermometer hit -50 last night at my sister's place (just outside town)- that's without the wind chill, BTW. I believe that's -58 Farenheit. Builds character.
The worst part about it is that your tires freeze...so, of course, all four have one flat spot. It's like driving on square tires until they warm up a bit...

Well I am enjoying the nice mid 20 and sunny days of winter once again. I better enjoy it while I can because more snow is in the outlook. I would like to see some pictures D if you have any.

-24 F here this morning. (without windchill as well)

Yukon, I can't imagine getting to 50 below!!! At 24 below we don't have the "square tire" phenomenon, but it hurts to breathe (because the mucus in your throat freezes). So I think today I will play inside.

I might be able to get some pics of the garage holes...the rest pretty much disintegrated when it hit the ground (and has since melted at any rate), and, well, you guys don't pay me enough to get pictures while it's falling.

Whiskers, I agree with Kiwi...you're nuckin' futs!

We have electric heaters in our antenna to keep it clear of ice, but the tower itself has no protection.

Back then we was young and dumb, and climbed anything that didn't move and a lot of things that did. That was 1969-73.
