Steepest Rate of Gain You've Hiked

The path wasn’t straight, but came out to about 600’ climb in 1500’ of distance. Found a bull moose that had lost it’s footing, tumbled to the bottom and died.

Me and a buddy did 1800 ft in 1.3 miles once. Didn’t realize there was a trail. We drank all our water and had a good hunt but were happy to discover the trail for the trek down.

Hells canyon, Oregon side, one mile up in two miles on the map. I was almost 40 when I figured out it was a dumb place to hunt elk.
I’m not nearly as experienced or badass as many of you, but I’ve never experienced anything like Hells Canyon. The bull I killed in 2018 was about 4.5 miles from the truck, but 2800 feet down in elevation, nearly all of which was in the last 1.5 miles. I have some great pictures that show the magnitude of that country but I’m wary of posting on the internet because of discernible background features. So this will have to do, though it doesn’t even come close to doing those hills justice.

Done this one a few times. 2400’ under a mile to the top. Truck was at river .

Not hunting ,but backpacked Taboose Pass twice in my life. 6500' in 9 miles. 5k' from trailhead to top 11,500'. Fishing was good at Bench Lake.

The older I get the more rest stops I have to take on steep terrain. Really a good workout but it kicks my butt. It made me change my rifle and pack. My new Nosler 30 weighs only 7 pounds including the scope. Carbon fiber everything. I think it will help.

Screw you, took me 42 lol. I'd do it again, but hated the 3 mile downhill back to the parking lot, plus the crowds were out of hand.
That was 6-7 years ago while still on Active Duty. We would do it fairly regularly. Best part of it was going to breakfast after ;)

I dont know but I do know that my buddy didn't make it last elk season in Colorado.

I told him all the muscle in the world doesn't beat will power when we made it to the top...lol

You guys are all amateurs. When I was a kid, I had to hike uphill five miles every morning to get to school. Then it was five miles uphill to get back home. I had to do it barefoot. In the snow. With barbed wire wrapped around my feet for traction. When I cried all the pain leaving my body caused trees to sprout and grow where the tear drops fell. They call it Sequoia National Park now.

Hells Canyon, Idaho side for me. Awesome country but intimidating. Only been there once, but would love to see it again.

All of this reminds me how much I now rely on a horse.

In my salad days, I drew a goat tag in the Mill Creek area. It was 3.5 miles in and 3500' elevation to get to where the goats hung out. It took 7 or 8 trips before I got one. My achilles tendons bothered me for nearly a year afterwards.987A3204-33C3-494E-819B-0BB118ADA966_1_201_a.jpeg
