Springtime Hog Hunt

so what happened to this thread.what happened to you dan. what do you guys want to do, rifle hunt archery hunt hell i say lets hunt them with dogs and a knife now thats fun

Dan has been down with a sinus infection, but I'm almost back to normal. I have plenty of stink pigs and would opt for ferral/russian hogs.. I would actually prefer a hog hunt and anywhere close to San Antonio is OK with me. As for the Hawaiian style dog and dagger hunts, FORGET IT! A very good friend of mine almost lost his life when the boar swung his head and came real close to dissembowling him. I'll leave dog and dagger hunts to the terminally insane.

Bow hunt, South Texas, Ferral or Russian is OK.. What can we arrange?

Rufus, check your PM.. SJ, Sent you an email. Let's kick start this thing..

danr55, sent you a return email. Sorry I didn't recognize that was you right away in the email you sent.

Well I just got back from our Christmas hog hunt, the one I booked with SJ, LOTS of good things to say about it. These folks treated us nice as can be, they had some good sized hogs, good accomodations, good (and lots of) food.

sorry, got called away. I'm posting from work and sometimes they expect me to actually DO some of it. :D
anyhoo, the ranch SJ booked for us was up north near Abeline Tx and ran $150 a day. we booked for 3 days and were allowed 1 trophy hog( 175# and "nice big tusks") and 2 meat hogs. Day one none of us (nine hunters)killed anything and there was only two animals seen. We were all perched on stands. Day two started slow but we saw a few more animals, these texacans almost had a revolution on thier hands. After lunch We spotted one as we headed back onto the field and Darren (from spring bear hunt '03) stalked and shot her. about 225#, the only kill that day. After dark some of the more desperate guys went out with a guide for some spot lighting and they took 3 smallish pigs.by this time the stick throwers had given up and everybody was using rifles. I gotta say that while spot lighting is legal in texas, it's not the way I am willing to hunt. Day 3, two guys gave up on it and headed north. The ranch owner was feeling bad about us and called in a guide with dogs (out of his own pocket) and two more guys went with them, killing two pigs about 125# or so. I'm still batting ZERO  so after lunch I watched Darren butcher his hog and we took off for home. Of course the final afternoon, the guys following dogs got hot- I haven't heard the final tally but the jpegs sent to me of cody's hog look great- a boar pushing 300#.
We had a full moon against us and they were just digging out of a 6" snow (6" of snow in TEXAS! |oo ) so the hogs were feeding all night and didn't have to travel for water. We should have walked more and 'perched' less. I think this ranch has more hogs than our trip would indicate and the quality of game was good. Just plain poor luck on our part. I want to thank Jim Barnes (SJ) for setting this one up and do recommend his service highly.

Bowhunting maniac, I like the sound of the hunt you were on. We should get something planned for late feb or early march?? anyone interested?? This is the time to make plane!!! airfare is dirt cheap, fare wars going on. Most major cities to dallas for 200$ or less. prices wont last!!!

I'll go along with anything that everyone else likes that is near San Antonio or between San Antonio and Austin. Someone make the call and let me know where.. I prefer archery hogs and have no interest in Javelina... In in.. even if it means hunting in March with Moosenutz... er, um I mean ESPECIALLY if it means hunting in March with Moosie.. Ok Oscar?

so it sounds like an archery trip is what everyone wants.what kind of hunts can we get from the guys here. i would rather give my money to someone on this board than some schmoo off the street.SJ tell us what you have and what kind of money it would run us.

danr55, you might want to check this place out. We went there a couple of years ago to pack the freezer. It is about 60 miles from San Antonio in the (self-proclaimed) "Hog capital of Texas". The owner's name is Craig Wilson, a great guy, and it looks like they have expanded since we went there. You can shoot unlimited hogs for something like $100-$150 a day. We ended up with 6 meat hogs in 2 days. Tons of fun.
Wilson Whitetails

I wont do that place..... says in the web page "no stalking allowed" I refuse to sit in a box blind all day waitng for something to come to a feeder. Lets get more info from the place bowhuntingmaniac went to. that sounded more to my liking.
Bowhuntingmaniac, can you post the contact info please ASAP??

Did I miss something? I thought that if you paid an extra $100 you got the nice lodge with the guide taking you to the blind/feeder. I don't want any part of that. If they don't allow stalking, I'm with you! This isn't hunting. It's target shooting with blood!

I think you boys are afraid you'll get stuck with Ol; Moosie in a Blind :D :D

Hell, We could get 'er done right here in Idaho on that local Game ranch if we're gunna hunt a Game ranch, It's a bow spot and stalk but not a Huge place as I recall. Never been there. That way I'm in 100% and I don't have to Fly to Texas, I'd even spring my $200 for the Flight into $200 worth of beer for the guys ;)

Well, Moosie, you all seem to know each other so well. ..... and I didnt want to invade into an area that may be sacred.......hehehehe.
Dude, when I first started posting, I saw a Post call "the Gathering. It was on a forum that has long since lost most it's members. I read for several days straight trying to catch up on what these guys were talking about. Every few posts were an Inside Joke, and I sure felt like an Outsider. Once I started posting within a week I was working my way up the Ranks and now I own most of the Guys and they post here at my home ;)

From that I learned two things,

1. A board is what you make of it. Especially at Moosies Hunttalk it only takes one post to be part of the "GANG". We accept all types and tend to not shun anyone and Welcome all with open arms unless they come in with Guns blazing looking for a fight. (Thats usully me on other sites :p )

2. I can't remember so It must not have been important ;)

BTW, My folks live in AZ now, I couldn't make it this year for the Javalina hunt but next yer warn the Police and You wives, Moosies heading to AZ for some Stank Piggies !!!!

I'll leave dog and dagger hunts to the terminally insane.
SJ. we need to talk about this kind of hunt some day :D

DanR, We'll do Our damedest to make it work. Planning is always the hard part.

I can get ya'll a hunt in Hondo, TX. for $150 per man unlimited hogs. It would be booked through Clay Pope d.b.a. Pope brothers Guide Service and outfitters www.varmintexpress.com (You'll have to copy and paste, I can't get it to post as a link) . Clay puts on a good hunt and you can shoot bow or gun if you want. I am not going to guarantee any of our hunts to fill a freezer because it is free range hunting and pigs can be just as difficult to hunt as anything at times but Clay will do what it takes to kill pigs. I would have to find out if it has to be all stand hunting (I know they hunt over feeders in stands and even have lighted feeders for anyone wo likes night hunting) or if it can be combined with spot and stalk. He actualy lets me sell the hunt $50 cheaper per man, per day than he does on his website. This is all I can offer in this area.

Ok, I'll git ya the contact info, but it has to wait until next week. I am guiding some javelina hunters right now, and wont be home until Monday.
Or, if you want I can contact him and see if we can get a deal....how many people are we talking about going?

Who's working the deal? SJ or Bowhuntingmaniac?

I like what SJ is saying, but I still have to check out the website...oh yeah. I still have to figure out how to shoot my 1st bow! LOL!
