South East Montana - Custer National Forest

No good deed goes unpunished. I'm an AZ guy and have no problem with the extra attention Randy gave our state via his dove and coues adventures. I've always felt that as hunters we are our own worst enemy. Always bickering amongst ourselves. This is ridiculous. Everyone loves the advocating for public lands, the info he provides, the fantastic show he produces, but then turn on him cuz he chooses to talk about SE Montana. Reminds me of people who can't stand politicians, and want to vote everyone out, but always vote for "their guy."

Don't start whining about Montana's fishing. It's absolutely phenomenal. If you can't get on the Mo, Maddy, Big Hole, Beaverhead and Ruby in a day and catch ample fish, the problem might be the fisherman. Montana's hunting can be great, and it can also be tough. This thread has definitely been derailed....

You call this whining. Go to hell. I've fished here for over 40 years. My response was "Tragedy of the Commons".

No I won't go to hell. I don't give two chits how long you've fished here. That doesn't mean you are any better at it. I'm not sure how we went from elk hunting in southeast Montana to the epic fishing in SW Montana.

Buzz

It will take every deer and elk in Montana to be wiped out before the people of this state wake up and demand a change in management of our wildlife.

Greenhorn, I don't know if there can be much more traffic in S.E. Mt, or N.E. for that matter.... What all of us in Eastern Mt. wonder about is why someone isn't plundering/robbing/raping Western Mt. and Eastern Wa. whilst all their men are in Eastern Mt hunting for that last elusive fork horn.

You are 100% correct. It's becoming more obvious, exponentially. But I suspect even after they're gone, people will still want 25 weeks of unrestricted hunting.

Ya'll know weed is legal in Colorado and Washington....I think some of you need a roadtrip
Cushman, you know what happened the last time somebody smoked weed in the Custer don't you? It was 4.5 years ago, and it nearly burned the whole place down. Be careful out there.

Damn, greenhorn!!! LOL Friggin stoners. I may be over-reacting in my posts before. Is the issue ONLY Custer, or the whole region? I'm been posting from a public land standpoint of the whole region, and I may be misunderstanding.

Maybe we should all start listening to some Doobie Brothers.

Just for curiosity sake, how long have you fished and hunted in Montana?

My reason for asking isn't to run you down or make fun of you, but I think part of the disconnect with this thread, is that many commenting on how "good" things are in Montana have nothing to compare NOW with.

I can tell you that much of the fishing in Montana has went the exact way of the hunting...to crap.

Go catch and keep a 10 fish limit of bull trout out of the Blackfoot...report back and tell me how that worked out for you.

Go catch a 10 fish limited of kokanee out of Placid Lake that average 16-18 inches each.

Go catch 3 10 fish limits of trout out of Holter that average 4-5 pounds a piece...and you have to chuck ice out of the cooler to make room for the last 5-6 fish...and 2 people can barely lift the cooler into the truck. Same with kokanee out of there as well...hard average of 20-22 inchers, and hanging 3 at the same time.

How about catching legitimate 100 whitefish limits in the Clark Fork or Blackfoot these days? Can you do that?

My point is, that things may look great for someone that hasn't seen what the hunting and fishing was like in the past.

Tragedy of the commons is right...don't be so quick to compare your version of what "good" is, to people that have been doing this crap for a couple few decades or more.

I'm here to tell you, a lot of it aint what it once was, by a long shot.

For all of those who are saying Montana quality of game has gone downhill, remember, it is FAR better than Idaho, but not as good as Colorado.

If you really want to have a top-quality experience, Colorado is the ONLY place to consider hunting.

All of our elk went to Wyoming and NM

I agree that there is a disconnect between the young guys on here and those that seen what it was like 40 years ago.

My comment was about Southwest Montana. Not placid lake, holter, or the Blackfoot. Those places may have gone downhill, but I don't know because I've never fished them. I fly fish only. I don't have anything against other methods, they just don't excite me like fly fishing does. As far as my comment about the fisherman being the problem, I can't imagine SW MT has gone downhill like the other areas you mentioned.

Last year a friend and I put 93 fish in the boat on the beaverhead in one day. Was it once better than that? Maybe it was. The surrounding rivers can all be that good.

The MO is a different animal. I'm betting back in the day it was better fishing. Those fish are educated and very picky.

Now, perhaps the state as a whole isn't as good. My comments are strictly about SW MT. To answer your question about how long I've been fishing in MT. Roughly 20 years. My grandpa started me with a fly rod at the age of 7. So you are correct that I haven't seen the fishing when it was as good as you guys do. You are also correct that me only having fished for 20 years has nothing to do with my abilities. I was fortunate enough to grow up with river front property and only lived 150 yards off the Jefferson. That's something I'm very thankful for!
