The weather around this country has pretty much sucked for weeks. Between impossible snow to get around in and wind, it's made for very tough conditions. The snow has finally melted enough that I can get around a little bit. I sure wish I had a snowmobile as I would've been out more. Anyway, I haven't been out since early January. I was having some serious coyote hunting withdrawals. Yesterday after work I decided to go even though the wind was blowing 15-20 mph. Normally this is not good conditions to call in and my hopes weren't very high as I ascended my way the steep hill to my pre-determined stand location. Sometimes you just have to hunt anyway despite the weather.
Near where I was going to set up I saw this in the frozen ground. Always a good sign when coyote hunting.
As I got myself settled in to call I was discouraged by the wind. It was blowing pretty good. Closer to 20mph than 15mph. I let out one series of howls. I wondered to myself if anything could hear it. As I was sitting there trying to decide what I wanted to do next I spotted a coyote on the horizon 300+ yards away. The bugger showed up within 30 seconds of my howl! I'm thinking to myself: "Wow! That was fast!" Anyway, I just sat there quiet watching to see what the coyote would do next. I'll be darned if he didn't just drop his head and come strolling right in. I'm now thinking: "Holy cow, is this really happening?" At 171 yards I bark him to a stop. He is facing me and I center the crosshairs on his chest and let the 55gr Hornady Vmax fly out of my 22-250. One dead coyote and one happy coyote hunter.
