ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A 70-year-old Juneau man has been given a jail sentence and a hefty fine for illegal guiding of brown bears on Admiralty Island.
Larry Hooton, owner of Seahook Charters, was ordered to spend three months in prison, fined $41,000 and ordered to pay up to $30,000 in restitution to the state and the U.S. Forest Service.
His sons, Shawn and Shane Hooton, also have been sentenced and fined for illegally taking brown bears during guided hunts on Admiralty Island.
Prosecutors say the Hootons conspired to illegally guide nonresident hunters for brown bears inside Admiralty Island National Monument in excess of their one-hunt permit.
