Got out with the Boss today to see if we could bring home a bird. We set up our decoys at dawn and has some calling action at day break then they went silent. We hung out another hour until our ADD got the best of us and we decided to walk the property. With no birds calling we headed back down the hill to our decoys and as we got close we heard a gobbler near the dekes.
I came out of the trees to where I could see our decoys, gave a call to figure out where he was hiding. We were 75 yards out with zero cover between us so we opted to make a run for it. We got back to our decoys, and had to place ourselves between the tom and our decoys, but we had good cover and good position.
A couple of putts and he was just over the horizon. With the lush grass he was under 30 yards away but we couldn't see him. Putt, putt....gobble. Putt, putt....gobble, but no bird. He wanted us to come to him and vice versa.
The he turned 90 degrees and headed up the hill and away. When he got to the trees at about 75ish yards he turned 90 degrees again to figure out what was up. He hung out there for about 5 minutes, responding to our calls but not coming out. Finally he came out of the trees and stayed high and began to strut.
He played it cool and slowly...SLOWLY worked his way down. He wanted the girls to come to him, it was at least 10 minutes for him to come down the hill 35 or so yards. We were set up behind a boulder, my wife waiting for him to make another few steps beyond a tree but he never did. He strutted and turned and I told her to pop over the rock. He began moving back up the hill. He turned broadside and stuck his head out and she let him have it at 40 ish yards. He dropped like a sack of hammers.
We headed home, did some work in the garden pulling the last of the winter veggies and made dinner. Pretty much an amazing day on spaceship earth for us.
