After coming up empty chasing archery whitetail, I licked my wounds and prepared for rifle season. I was planning on bringing the camper up with the wife and kiddos, but a snow storm came in. Ended up renting a cabin to make sure the family was comfortable, and they had a blast. I had a walk-in area picked out, but it didn't open up until monday the 1st, and rifle season has been open since the 16th for the rest of the unit. It was saturday night, and I wanted to get out after the fresh snow. I found a little slice of state land on the ol' on-X and said why the hell not...

Woke up early Sunday morning, poored my coffee and headed out not expecting anything other then a hike with my rifle. I Stopped by the local gas station and added some more caffeine with a giant redbull and a hour later, showed up right at light. I throw on my pack and hike about 3/4 of a mile to the edge of the State land. Popped up on top of a hill, looked over, and ther was a buck standing broadside at 147 yards down the other side staring at me. I couldnt believe it....

With my rifle was still strapped in my pack and it was a full on fire drill moment. I threw my pack down, took out my 6.5 prc, and to my amazement the buck was still standing there. I put my crosshairs on his shoulder and squeezed off. He ran no more than 5 yards and dropped. I sat there in disbelief, it never happens like that!! This is only my third whitetail, so im pretty excited about it. I hiked down and started to break him down all by 8 am. It took 2 trips to get everything out and i was back in the truck by 1030, back to the cabin before noon.

Yeah, there will be days like that. Enjoy them, they help the average in the long run. Nice buck. Sometimes hunting is just a walk in the woods.

Good stuff, I had a similar experience on Sunday. After a slow morning hunt, I went out at noon to kill some time before the evening. On my way back, a buck stepped out at 100 yards and I ended my hunt. Love shooting an animal at 2 in the afternoon!

Congratulations!

Enjoy the quick hunt and remember it when your legs and lungs are burning on your next hunt.
