So in less than a year my beautiful new boots have a nice ripe smell like a skunk ape has been wearing them in the dead of summer.. any remedies out there

I've had a pair of airat boots for over 3 years and wear them about every day. My remedy..... Remove the insole and washed it separately the same way. Get the inside wet and add a baking soda and water so that it's kinda like a paste. Scrub that in the inside fabric and add vinegar and scrub. Do that a few times then wash them out thoroughly. Let them dry out good and add mink oil and they're good to go for a few months.

Like Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump...socks. Biggest thing for me is changing my socks - I'll go through a couple pairs of socks a day. I just try to make sure my feet aren't sweaty or wet when I put them on and if I have been hiking or working out I'll switch them up.

*edit - sorry I have no remedy for already stanked up boots/shoes

The PEET boot dryer is plugged in year-round at our house. I think it's important to keep 'em dry inside and out as much as possible. Might help?
Good luck.

I mix up a little bottle of MiraZyme in solution and spray the inside. Works OK, and is cheap.

I spray the inside of mine with original antibacterial Lysol. The aerosol cans. Has worked great for years now. I figure if it works for bowling alleys across the nation there must be something to it....

Toss into the freezer. That will kill the bacteria. The smell is generally from bacteria farts. Sweat will create more food for the bacteria when they return so keep boots dry as possible and change socks on regular basis. Dried sweat in your socks creates salt crystals which are jagged in shape and will slice your skin up so wash your socks as well as let them dry if on a long hunt with only a couple pairs of socks. I use liner socks which helps. Properly lacing and tying boot strings also helps. There is a pattern to how tie the strings so you lock in the pressure at the foot and have a different level of pressure for the ankle. Is all one big ecosystem to maintain healthy feet in the wilderness.

I’ve done both, they both are great ideas.

Wear crocs

I like your style...

In 2016 I came upon a man in the high country stalking a mule deer in his boxers with crocs on. Ended up talking to him days later to find out he was just outside his tent making coffee for the morning when a nice 4 point walked by and he was trying to catch up to it.... He didn't but funny to see

Kill it with fire!

I think I will try the Lysol idea, my boots could make a buzzard sick.

Use dryer sheets. If I have a pair of boots/shoes that gets funky, I'll throw some dryer sheets into them. They absorb the smell so you have to throw one or two away at first, but then they keep it funky fresh.

Charcoal brickets placed inside of boots for 24 hours or longer will take a lot of stink out. Use Peet dryers daily it will save your boots in the long run.
