Shameful "professional"

Thanks for the replies. I would say - to me - it is a big deal. I think everything should be done to keep the younger generations hunting. The more we (adults) allow the kids to harvest animals - the better we are all off. Maybe this type of stuff doens't happen as much in the west....but here in the midwest our public lands are almost over run with people and only the private landowners and those who can afford a huge lease have a chance at a trophy. Keep the kids hunting and passing on our values - or it won't be many more generations and it will most likely be lost.

I agree with you 100% except that shooting the biggest buck does not equal keeping kids hunting.

In fact, that mentality may just do the opposite because it turns the sport into a pissing contest and makes kids unsatisfied with anything other than a huge set of horns. That takes a lot of the fun right out of it.

Kids need to be taken out and introduced to the entire craft of hunting and the outdoors. I can promise you that not a single 25 year old sitting in prison or in an Occupy Wall Street camp right now would have been "saved" by shooting a monster buck their first year.

There is absolutely no relationship between keeping kids interested in hunting and shooting a giant deer their first year.

I agree...except I didn't say big buck. I wrote trophy...whatever that may be. A mature animal should be a goal for a seasoned hunter...not a kid.

I would agree...it's more about promoting a selfless attitude, which obviously did not happen.

That's exactly right John, and that's why I said the kid was lucky to be out there on a free hunt on the private property to begin with! The article was explicit in that the kid was invited there to shoot a management buck and not either of the two big ones the guy that owned the farm was after. The post by belly-deep was spot on and killing anything or the biggest animal is not what the kids need to be taught to keep them hunting. It's the fun of the hunt and if they get something it's a bonus! Cripes, I was involved in two more hunts this year helping a friend that had an elk tag in AZ and a mulie tag in NM. I had as much or more fun on those two hunts just being there and helping out than I did filling my deer tag in Wyoming where I did have a license!
I'm completely befuddled by the previous post by DWarcher. The farm owner didn't even have to invite the kid and his Dad out to hunt his farm, so it's completely the opposite of what you stated about teaching a selfless attitude and that it didn't happen on the hunt. Many kids nowadays expect to get things with nothing put out in return and many adults are allowing that to happen. They need to get their feet wet just like my generation did, put their time in and work for what they get and not have everything just given to them! That kid knew what he was going to be able to shoot from the start and that if one of those big bucks came out that it was the owner's shot. The kid's Dad even made sure the farm owner went and got his tag before they went out on the hunt, so what are you guys dissing the farm owner for?

I guess that I put myself in the position of those involved and would get more excited watching the kid kill that buck rather than hanging a 140 incher on the wall. Probably wrong to make that judgement but that's just me...

Kudos to the landowner for letting them hunt there to begin with.

DW---That makes a lot more sense and I'm with you on that as far as the way the two of us may have done it. I also really enjoy seeing others that haven't taken the amount or variety of game that I've been privileged to take since I started hunting in 1953, but I still like to squeeze the trigger once or twice a year too!!!

"These guys help me do everything on my farm including shed hunt, place stands and plant food plots."
I don't think they were 'lucky' to be allowed to hunt somewhere when they put that much effort into helping out on the ranch. Yea, the guy didn't have to invite them but he should have if he hadn't.

"We had come to an agreement a year or so ago to let Jasper shoot a management buck on my farm."
Again, he didn't have to let the kid shoot the trophy but he definitely could have as it was his ranch his 'best friend's' kid was hunting. Seems like his ego got in his way, IMO.

The basic complaint I have it this: The guy didn't let the kid shoot because the buck was too big. I put myself in the kids shoes - 16 years old and drew an iowa mz tag (+$500) and this older guy makes me put my gun aside so he can shoot the big deer. Sad indeed.

Give me a break! The kid and his Dad worked at the farm for the priviledge of getting to hunt a management buck, not a B&C trophy! A management deer on that Iowa farm is probably one damn good trophy for a kid starting out and better than a lot of us will ever get the chance to hunt. If they didn't agree with the strategy of the hunt that took place, they didn't have to go out with him and they knew what they were getting into from the getgo. Maybe the guy could have let the kid shoot, and maybe some of us would have let the kid do the shooting, but it's his farm with a lot of expenses for the land, taxes, equipment, etc. and I flat think you're wrong to feel the landowner is an ass for shooting the deer. Life goes on and the kid probably is the ONE who had no problem with it and you guys are crying like YOU were the one that got shafted.

Not really a big deal after reading the article in the link posted. The kids dad told the farm owner to go buy his tag, they all knew full well what would happen if one of the 2 bucks came into range.

Move along, these aren't the droids you're looking for.

:D
Definition of OPINION
a view, judgment, or appraisal formed in the mind about a particular matter

I'm with you, no big deal just stating an opinion...no more or less than anyone else. Gotta be something better to start bickering over, like whether super tag winners should have to pose for a picture with the animal they shoot.
