With Canadian imports banned cattle prices in the US might go up, but if people really start getting concerned about mad cow disease it might kill the demand for beef. I hate to be pessimistic, but if they found one case of MCD in Canada I suspect they'll find another. McDonalds stock took a dive. Maybe the stock market is betting more MCD cases will show up.

What would you do if you were a rancher?

"The United States banned all beef imports from Canada after a lone case of mad cow disease was discovered in the heart of Canada's cattle country on Tuesday."

This could turn into a huge tragedy. Remember what happened in England?

Two years ago I had to listen to a lot of criticism when I said CWD might be a serious threat.

"Canada is the top foreign supplier of live cattle to the United States, exporting 1.7 million head last year, or 75 percent of the total U.S. imports. About seven percent of beef consumed by Amercians is from Canada, said Michelle Peterson, a spokeswoman for the National Cattleman's Beef Association, which represents U.S. beef producers."

Ithaca...
I was driving down the road today and heard this on the radio.... The first thing I thought of was....

Ithaca will love this one

I Shit you not.... I even said it outloud and I was the only one in the truck.....

Delw

Wholesale beef prices have been going up for several months now. This ban will cause a greater shortage, and prices will most likly go through the roof. Thats good news for American ranchers. Bad news for steak eaters, can you say $10.00 lb for a N.Y. steak ?

Wonder why McDonald's stock took a dive over this? It wasn't that long ago it was announced that they had contracted a huge amount of their hamburger from Brazil(?).

del, "Ithaca will love this one"

I can't be happy over any disease affecting animals or humans getting a foothold on our continent--or any other one. What happened in England was a huge tragedy for the animals and people there.

As for McDonald stock, the market probably figures any bad news about beef will reduce consumption.

I'm all for people finding healthier alternatives to public land/feedlot beef- healthier for people and healthier for the environment too. I'm a meat eater but as I've reduced meat consumption over the last ten years I've definitely felt a healthy benefit.

As a small operator, these sort of things in the news is actually good for business.... as more people get to know the facts about their food supply. TG, we have such a safe American food supply......... But all these terrible things that happen to in any sector of AG, the whole AG industry gets nailed.
Points=== CWD in one cow in Canada, IT says the entire beef industry is shot.
Public lands grazed== IT wants to remove grazing livestock.
AG is such a HUGE industry on this earth, only crazy people with an agenda would try to say the whole thing is terrible and should be abandoned.

Lost, I sure wish you'd quit lying about what I've said. Every time you claim I want all livestock/cattle removed from public land I challenge you to quote where I said that. You never have.

It's time to quit lying.

Ithica,

I don't understand Lost accusing you of that.

How many times do I have to tell everyone ---
All Welfare Ranching must end immediately!!! Remove Livestock from Public Grounds. Elkgunner 5-21-03

Ithica, you keep getting accused of my extremism. Hang around me, and you will look like a middle of the road guy...
biggrin.gif

Gunner, I've been trying for years to tell everybody what a nice, sweet, moderate middle of the roader I am but they never believe me!
biggrin.gif
All I want is public land grazing reduced to the level where the range can recover and be in excellent condition---just like my own land is.

Any American who doesn't want their own public land to be taken care of so it's in excellent condition must have a screw loose!
biggrin.gif

Just point out to them, that they need to accept your views, to keep extremists like me from winning...
smile.gif

And when they say we need to compromise, tell them the compromise is your position, the no compromise is Elkgunner's....

My family has endured fluctuations in cattle prices for over a hundred years. The ranch is still there and the cattle still make a living for it, just some years are better than others. During the drought of the 30's, my Grandpa went to work for the CCC to buy feed for the cattle. This is at a time when others bailed and headed to California to look for work.

But, my Uncle did tell me how to make a quick million dollars off ranching. Start out with two million.

When the day comes that the majority of Americans do not eat meat, either by choice, or because they can not afford to, LEGAL HUNTING WILL BE OVER! I hope this does not happen in my lifetime. I would hate to have to become a poacher.

Paul

Paul, "LEGAL HUNTING WILL BE OVER!" What do you base that opinion on?

I suspect increased awareness of habitat destruction by deer and, also, the number of deer related auto accidents will make people realize hunting is a valuable wildlife management option. Pressure to control deer numbers in many Eastern states comes from the insurance industry that doesn't like paying the accident claims.

What do base your opinion on?

In Germany the feral hogs are a real problem, even having killed some people. It is illegal to kill a feral hog in Germany. Someday it could be illegal to kill deer in this country. I wouldn't bet against it.

Paul

I base my opinion on what's already happening in states like NJ, PA, NY etc. where the ins. industry wants deer numbers controlled and people are upset about the inconveniences related to auto/deer accidents and also in places where people are being educated about habitat damage---mostly around urban areas in Eastern and mid western states.

Here's how you can educate yourself:

What do you base your opinion on? Did you notice that I answered your question but you ignored mine?

Somebody is making shit up

InGermany, the hunting bag of wild boar has tripled duringthe last 20 years (Official statistic of the German HuntingSociety; reference 74). These data would suggest thatthe total number of wild boar in Europe can be estimatedto be approximately 15-20 million

GermanyThe German delegation outlined the current CSF situation in the country. Six casesof CSF had been recorded in domestic pigs in Rhineland-Palatinate and a seventhcase has recently been diagnosed in Lower Saxony. All are associated withendemic CSF in local feral pig populations. Germany is implementing programmesto limit CSF in feral pig populations through vaccination and hunting. The Germanauthorities have submitted additional vaccination programmes for CSF in wild boar,in particular in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland Palatinate

Sorry Marland,

I read this story a couple years ago, and my recollection wasn't quite 100%. Should have said Berlin, not Germany, and that the pigs are protected and only the police can shot them, and only under special circumstances.

From a newspaper in the U.K.:

A POPULATION explosion among Germany’s wild pigs is reaching crisis levels with the large and dangerous animals wreaking havoc in towns and cities across the country.

In Berlin, the pigs are spreading out of their woodland habitat into gardens and cemeteries. The huge tusked foragers smash gravestones in their hunt for worms and mice, eat flower beds and overturn dustbins. Pet dogs have been gored to death and others injured.

Recently in the suburb of Friedrichshain, police snipers were deployed to shoot a wild pig in the courtyard of a block of flats. Some 100 residents were held captive for over an hour before police killed the 200lb beast with six shots.

Further south in Neuenstadt, in Baden-Wuerttemberg, a 300lb wild pig charged through the plate glass door of a fast-food shop and hurled himself at a doner kebab rotating on a spit. As staff tried to chase it off the premises, the pig wrecked the shop, before running out on to a road where it was hit by a car and killed.

Across Germany foresters and police are reporting increasing numbers of calls about pig incursions into gardens, allotments and even homes. One woman in Munich came down to breakfast to see a mature tusker gorging on a 15lb bag of dog biscuits. It had wandered from nearby woodland, through the garden and in the open back door.

Even Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, a World Cup venue in 2006, looks on some mornings more like a ploughed field than a football pitch after the pigs’ nocturnal visits. In the Grünewald district of Berlin, the pigs are swarming into school playgrounds at lunchtimes, looking for food.

The arrival of the pigs has triggered fear and anger. People are unable to cross city centre parks at night without the risk of attack. A Berlin vet, Martine Rauch-Ernst, 38, wrote to the city government saying: "I do not live in Africa where one might be expected to reside next to wild beasts but in the centre of a modern capital. This morning I was late for an appointments due to a family of wild pigs surrounding my car. Time has come for action."

Kaus Eichstaedt, mayor of the Zehlendorf district of the city, has declared war on the pigs whose population has been fuelled by a plentiful food supply during a mostly mild winter. By some estimates there are 20,000 wild pigs in and around Berlin alone.

Misguided members of the public have also contributed to the problem by feeding the pigs in city parks, even though there is a £3,000 fine for doing so.

"I call on police and hunters to drive the pigs from the city," Mr Eichstaed said. "Clapping and whistling and making a commotion does no good. They only fear a gun." However, hunting the pigs is against the law as the animals are protected. Only the police may open fire on them and only then when they think life or property is endangered.

Paul, "What do you base your opinion on? Did you notice that I answered your question but you ignored mine?" Posted 5/22 in this thread.

Maybe you're basing all your opinions on incomplete recollections!

Get back on your medication!

Ok Paul that makes more sense. I was gonna say I know several people that's hunted them over there and that had to be brand new or you were running a gambit. just a simple matter of the fingers typing something different that what the brain told them to
