Sage grouse in the interim?

HTers,

Is it worth bringing a shotgun to Wyoming this October while chasing big game? My first tag in Oct, will be the 5th to the 15th. With the second tag from the 15th to 20th. So there is potential for downtime if I fill my first tag early.

I've always wanted a chance at a sage grouse. I will be dog-less, so, should I take my 12 gauge? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Boomer

I'll be out there in September for a cow tag. So the question is still valid.

Then sure, why not? I’ve shot a handful of them and never used a dog. Might get lucky and see them when you’re driving around.

I would opt for a younger bird to eat, unless you plan to pressure cook it.
If we're out hunting pronghorn during the sage grouse season we always have a shotgun with us.

When I was a kid I read, and have many times since, in The Ted Trueblood Hunting Treasury about his sage grouse, pronghorn combo trips in Wyoming, and I have been dreaming about that trip ever since! I'll finally do one in a few years when my kids get just a little older to take along, and I've built up a few points to get a really good unit.

Great luck on your hunt, hope you find all you are looking for, game and memories!
