Not Virginia anymore!
Are there going to be enough antelope left in Region 7 for me to draw a tag over there as a second choice? My dad is coming out next fall and has always wanted to go antelope hunting. I think we'll head down to Wyoming and get him a leftover tag, but I'd also like to have another rifle tag of my own to use while he's out here. I'd prefer to hunt another unit, but it's not a guaranteed tag, so I'm debating whether to just put Region 7 as my first choice or not.

I`d think that if you want to hunt Region 7 this year you`ll need to do first choice....
The hard winter in 6 is going to send a lot of guys south I`d imagine.

I have a buddy that lives in Newcastle and he said the antelope herd just isn't what it was even last year after a pretty rough winter this year

There should be plenty of leftover tags in Wyoming to chose from in a big circle around Gillette. It's funny the previous post mentions a bad winter around Newcastle because I heard the weather from Gillette on down toward Casper where there are tons of antelope was not bad at all as far as snow or goat mortality.

Sorry, let me clarify a little bit. I am a Montana resident. My father lives in Virginia. We may get him a leftover tag in Wyoming. Not sure yet. I normally wouldn't mind falling back on the archery only tag in Montana, but I want to make sure I have a rifle tag this year since he'll bet out here this fall and has never been on a western hunt. If I have decent chance of drawing Region 7 (Montana) as my second choice, I'd like to list another unit, which isn't a guaranteed tag, as my first choice.

I'm with Randy 11. You probably won't draw region 7 as a second choice. Your options are either draw your preferred choice (or not and not have an antelope tag) or go with region 7 and probably get an antelope tag.

If you put in as a party with your NR father you''ll both be in the NR pool.

We have hunted region 7 for many years in the past. Last fall (2010) was the worse we have ever found it for antelope numbers. In talking to a long time rancher friend, who is 3rd generation on the ranch, he says he may go weeks before seeing an antelope as of right now.

No way of really knowing but I would suspect very few doe tags will be available this year where in the past we always had 2 doe tags apiece and the ranchers encouraged you to get as many doe tags as you could.

I'd say if you want reg 7 then you'd best be making that your first choice

Yep..the draw odds are going down every year. I don't think they were much over 80% last year. Even the 900 tag wasn't 100% draw.

Doesn't look like they are cutting the doe/fawn tags from last year. I'm sure overall numbers will be down this year depending on what part of the region you are in..but you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding lopes.
