My buddy and I decided to run over to the straights for the weekend to look for elk and deer. We made good time with decent seas and when we hit the Shelikof Straights it was flat calm.
We hadn't seen anything so far so we decided to run over to Malina Bay and have a look see. Well all we saw over there was a bear. Started back towards where a couple of guys we know had shot a couple cows the weekend before. Got to the beach and spotted this guy.
A fine bear that we figured in the 9.5-10 foot range. He's definetly a contender for next spring, since my buddy and I both have tags for this area in the spring. We beached the boat about a quarter mile down the beach from him and hiked up so we could see into the valley. No elk, but we finally spotted a doe and another bear way back in. Back to the boat before the wind picked up. Start down the straights and spot a fox on shore. I always wanted a black phase so I take him. We go around another point and there's another black fox so my buddy takes that one.
Spot 2 more does, but no bucks. End the day with an hour and a half of duck hunting. Pick up about 5 ducks and go anchor for the night. Get up and duck hunt for another hour and half, have a good shoot with 8 ducks, end up with 7 harlequin, 5 goldeneye and a white-wing scoter. Do a little looking for deer on the way in but don't see a thing. No big critters shot, but it was good to get out of town for the weekend anyway.
