Well, I've tossed these around in my head since well before I moved here. How would you rank the big game animals in Alaska. Not how you would think others would hunt them, but how you would hunt them if you had a chance.
Here's the list.
Moose
Caribou
Dall Sheep
Mountain Goat
Brown Bear
Grizzly Bear
Black Bear
Blacktail Deer
Roosevelt Elk
Bison
Muskox
Wolverine
Wolf
Maybe I should have left out wolf and wolverine, because to me they are basically a varmit. I wouldn't mind having a wolverine pelt and I'd never pass up a wolf if I saw one hunting.
Basically this is how I had them ranked when I moved here 5 years ago ( ) is what I've taken.
Mt Goat (9.75" billy)
Dall Sheep (37" ram)
Caribou (Nice Bull)
Moose (50" bull)
Blacktail (7 bucks nothing great)
Brown Bear
Muskox
Elk (busted horned 3x3)
Black Bear (5.25' lost in a crevasse)
Griz
Bison
Having lived here for 5 years I wouldn't change that ranking much. I'd say rams and goats are tied for first. Maybe a slight edge to the Dall's just because they are so d@mned good eating. I would like to better the moose I took and may possibly put that ahead of the caribou. Moose are a beast to pack though. Blacktail may move down with black bear moving into its place. I still plan to kill a pig blacktail, but black bear hunting in the spring is a blast and since mine slid into a crevasse I don't have a rug yet. Brown bears hold no real charm for me. I've run into or seen over 60 since I've been here and still have only a mild urge to shoot one. I'd love to hunt muskox, but they are expensive and the main challenge to the hunt is not to freeze. Griz, seen one one the moose hunt, but basically smaller than a brown and few people can tell the difference.
Have fun. I'll take everyone's ranking in a month or two and calculate a "Hunt Talk" ranking.
Here's my final list
