On my 'ta do' list and real possible it could be this Fall...Any help is appreciated (PM)! I've also been looking at basing at some of the Lodges at either Coffman Cove or Thornebay if anyone knows or has used them...

No real secret to them.

I don't bowhunt, but I do kill most of them at bow range during the rut.

Thorne Bay and Coffman would be a good spot to bunk. Drying out every night is huge. Google Earth is your #1 friend for POW. Most of the island has good coverage. Bucks all over the place so no side of the island is better.

When I look for a spot to hunt, I look for several things. 1. Distance from the road. Think at least .5 of a mile by gps if not hunting around clearcuts. 2. Proximity to a "big" alpine area. The areas coming off the big mountains have a bit higher density. 3. Big, dark timber. They love it. If it's above a clearcut with a road on the bottom, they love it even more. 4. Several small, scattered muskegs. 5. A "bump", with old growth. A slight hill, that defines it from other areas. They are like bass. They love some structure that sets it apart from what's around it. A small muskeg on the top is the frosting on the cake.

Next, you'll need some calls. A deer bleet, a grunt, and some rattle horns. They come in several different ways. Some times they'll sneak in alone, to check out what's going on. Other times they charge in. You'll call in about 20 does for every buck. But, sometimes a doe will have a buck on her tail. That's the downfall of many of the mature bucks. They stick with the doe, and you get the buck.

Good Luck.

If you need a partner, i'll be in Alaska till Sept. 6th this year and would love to head there and give them a try with my bow.I hear you have to go high early.I'll have to check out the sites you mentioned.I think I contacted Coffman already and they were booked if I remember correct. At least for the dates I would be there

We went in 2011 and it was a blast. We stayed in Thorne Bay and the guy rented us a cabin, truck, boat, and took us halibut fishing one day. All of us harvested a buck. This hunt is worth it!
